So, as well as Neven Subotic giving Arjen Robben the old ‘Keown’ treatment after a spaffed penalty, it seems that Bayern Munich ‘keeper Manuel Neuer was also subjected to a bit of antagonisation during last night’s clash at the Bundesliga summit – finding himself engulfed in a banana blizzard at one point…

Indeed, the invading yellow droops were still clearly visible raked up and under the advertising hoardings when Robert Lewandowski scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute…

Why? Hands up, we’ve got no idea – though it’s possible it’s something to do with Neuer having formerly played for Dortmund’s sworn mortal foes down the road at Schalke.

Anybody care to shed any light?

I would of just eaten one

  2. Timundo says:

Neuer’s predecessor at Bayern, Oliver Kahn, was a key target for banana-throwers. Why? In earlier times Harald Schmidt, a German TV host, tried to spoof Kahn in his shows by acting like a kind of gorilla. As Neuer has been playing for Schalke, Dortmund’s rivals, for several years, some Dortmund supporters may have found it funny to give him the same treatment. Funny? Not at all, I think.

  3. Happy says:

Neuer stayed incredibly cool during this game. At one point he even did a no-look behind-the-back pass to someone, nothing useful but looked very classy and funny!

  4. alan says:

If he was black, people would call it racism. Since he’s white, it’s hilarious. I, for one, choose to find the funny side in banana missiles regardless of skin colour.

  5. Jave says:

@alan can’t imagine samba or roberto carlos laughing it off…my understanding is that when bananas are thrown at black players it is (more often than not) a direct reference to their ethnicity and skin colour, implying they are no more than a monkey and therefore ‘sub human’. If that’s not racism don’t know what is…Calling Kahn a gorilla is more of a reference to his genuinely Neanderthal like characteristics (massive forehead).I understand where your coming from but think your missing the point.

  6. Davy says:

@ Jave, i agree although don’t see where he is coming from at all. Throwing a banana at a black player is totally racist and everybody knows it

  7. vvzla says:

i’m with jave. well said, mate.

  8. Alex says:

    No more alan bashing!

To add to what Timundo said:
The Dortmund fans were also chanting “ein Leben lang ohne Schale in der Hand” at Neuer. ‘Schale’ can mean ‘bowl’ or ‘dish’ and is often used to refer to the Bundesliga trophy, it can also mean ‘peel’. The whole phrase thus translates as “A whole life without holding the trophy/peel in your hand” (Schalke have never won the Bundesliga).

  10. usrick says:

Tradition or not, and irrespective of the race of the target, it seems to me that throwing bananas or anything else at players during a game is a danger and the thrower ought to be removed from the stadium.

  11. anna says:

    @usrick
To be fair, they threw the bananas during half time.

  12. Mr. Sparkle says:

Anna, they have won the German championship. Just not as it’s called today, that’s like claiming that Liverpool have never won the League because they won all their trophies prior to reorganization.

  13. usrick says:

Okay – that should eliminate the safety issue.

  14. anna says:

Mr. Sparkle, I know, that’s why I said they never won the Bundesliga (which has “only” been around since 1963). The last time Schalke were German champions was in the 50s and the Dortmund fans love to remind them of that fact.

  15. Del says:

Before Timundo provided us with that informed explanation my guess was that the Dortmund fans were trying to help their team by throwing bananas for the Schalke keeper to slip on. It seemed logical at the time.

  16. Richard says:

Yeah I thought they were to slip on also, ha. Thanks Timundo for the info.

To me it’s all harmless fun and Neuer laughed it off. Crap like laser pointers on players during the game is much worse IMO.

  17. yngwie j. malmsteen says:

always thought neuer was a massive cunt…just something with the way his face looked at byern’s demolition of basel made me want to kick it in

  18. confuscious says:

@anna: I think they’re referring to the fact that Neuer has never won the Bundesliga. Before coming to Bayern he stated that he really wanted to win the german title and thats why he’s going. So they may be making fun of the fact that he probably won’t win it here this season either.
BTW, did they start chanting after Bayern conceded?

  19. Redskywalker says:

    This racism is unnacceptable!!

haha no these photos are hilarious, looks like even he found it funny

  20. bayerndude says:

50 years without winning a championship title is more than most Schalke supporters are old.
So, “A whole life without holding the trophy in your hand” fits for most of them.

  21. Berts says:

    @ jave

No my friend, YOU are missing the point, if someone throws a banana at someone of black complexion and it is a reference to they’re likeness to a monkey, how is saying Oliver Khan looks like a neanderthal any different? you refer to his likeness to a “sub human”, that is also degrading and insulting in the same way that throwing a banana at a black player would be.

Both are idiotic things to do in my opinion.
