Galatasaray 3-2 Real Madrid (3-5 agg) – Champions League – 9th April

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo bookended this quarter-final second-leg tie in Istanbul, but in between those two goals, Gala produced a superb battling performance, roared on by the home fans.

Ronaldo’s goal, from close-range, came on eight minutes but Emmanuel Eboue’s wonder-strike just before the hour-mark kickstarted a Gala comeback which saw Wesley Sneijder and then Didier Drogba (courtesy of a superb backheeled flick) put the Turkish giants 3-1 up in the game and 4-3 down on aggregate.

However, even the sending-off of sub Alvaro Arbeloa couldn’t help Gala get another goal or two and ultimately it was Ronaldo who would score the final goal of the game.

Jose Mourinho’s men go through but what a decent performance from the home side!

They may no longer play in that frankly terrifying pit that us United fans remember, but their fans certainly still know how to intimidate.

It must be hard enough for the Galatasaray players, let alone the away team.

Still, what a second half performance. When it got to 3-1 I forgot myself and thought one more goal would see them through (caught up in the moment, logical thinking thrown out of the window much like the Madrid defence).

Was a great game to watch, and I’m sure the Galatasaray fans will have went home with their heads held high.

As for Madrid, if this is how they want to face a team in the semi’s they had better watch out.

Ronaldo is a magician but even he can’t stop complacency.

it was a surprisingly good game in the end. i didn’t hold out much hope once ronaldos goal went in, but fair play to galatasaray they kept on going. and Eboue’s was something else, bloody hell did he hit that.
