Soccer - UEFA Champions League - Group H - Celtic v Barcelona - Celtic Park

The away side may well have ended the night with 82% possession but Celtic plugged away admirably to a 0-1 defeat against Barcelona at Parkhead in the Champions League last night, though they were forced to do so with ten men for the last half-hour of the game after captain Scott Brown was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute for taking the smallest of swipes at a grounded Neymar – who reacted exactly as you’d expect: by flailing around like someone had discharged a red hot crossbow bolt into his lower abdomen…

Admittedly not the cleverest of conduct from a clearly frustrated Brown, but Neymar’s reaction, as per usual, was totally pathetic. Celtic boss Neil Lennon seemed to agree, telling reporters apres le match:

“I don’t think Neymar does himself any favours by the way he behaves at times so I don’t think I need to apologise to him and I don’t think I need to justify the defence of my captain.

“The sending-off is uncalled for and unnecessary. It’s very soft. I have looked at it; if there was any contact it was minimal.”

Church. Brown’s aggression definitely got the better of him, but the underlying fact here is that Neymar is a terrible little human being…

For “Scrapper” read “moron”, and for “harshly” read “correctly”.

  2. S says:

    Grim. Might need hip surgery.

  3. b says:

neymar is such a little twat.

  4. ewr says:

    Did he died?

  5. Deano says:

    Harshly sent off??
You must me pulling my nosehair!
    Overreaction yes, red card definately!

  6. Tyler says:

Typical British BS. Kicking a man when he’s down is not football no matter how hard you kick… You Brits should get that through your thick skulls.

  7. Si says:

Scott Brown has been a liability ever since he was a wee bairn at Hibs.

It was an idiotic thing to do, especially in front of the referee, and deserved a red card.

That said, Neymar needs to stop writhing around, although in fairness he was the most fouled player on the pitch yesterday and the referee seemed content to let him get a hiding.

  8. Ali says:

It is the ‘British way’ I guess. This is why the national teams are awful. There is too much defence of this kind of thuggery. Correctly sent off. Neymar reacted correctly to show that he had been kicked and wanted the ref to do something.
See you later Celtic – you guys should just stick to Sunday league pub football anyway.

  9. jules says:

Bahrami did the exact same thing to Arteta last night in the Napoli game didn’t even get a warning. Its a fact refs like sending Barcas opposition off see Van Persies second yellow in the Nou Camp for kicking the ball a SECOND after he’d blown his whistle. Thuggery? Football is a contact sport this hind of thing needs stamping out acting and rolling around like Jordi Alba rolling around after Costa playfully ruffled his hair these over reactions need punishing retrospectivley. Brown kicked out but whats the difference between a cynical trip when some ones running mid flight more dangerous but still just a yellow.

  10. Wilson says:

Not saying Brown isn’t a cunt for kicking Neymar, but really? Its like Neymar is sending an open challenge to everyone in Hollywood for Best Actor in the 2014 Oscars.

  11. Al says:

    Typical fanboy drivel.
Speaking of play-acting, what were Samaras and Stokes doing on the field? They were certainly not trying to play a fair game.. Stokes even got Cesc yellow carded for his shameless dive after stomping on Cesc’s ankle and Samaras kept buckling down as if he had jelly legs.

Not sure why folks are so upset about your use of “harsh”, but I’d have definitely warned Brown. Clearly, he had no intention of anything malicious, or he’d have taken a chunk out of Neymar; on the other hand, that is at least a yellow worthy offense. He needs a card of some kind. Though, I’d have given Neymar a yellow for play-acting, also. In some sense, Brown received a red for “fake aggression”, while Neymar received nout for “fake victimization”.

  13. Neil says:

Celtic should stop whining and think themselves lucky they only got one red card. Izaguirre should have been sent off for his tackle on Bartra towards the end of the game.

  14. Miguel - NyC says:

I don’t understand why Pies keep making excuses for this type of behavior. This mentality is what has kept British football behind. Do you realize that of the best players in the EPL are NOT british? Hazard, Yaya, Mata, Silva, Aguero, Suarez, Michu, Vidic, Van Persie, and the list goes on and on (you can add the managers there as well). Kicking a man down because he has won is not an excuse and it is not a part of football. Neymar received half of the Barca fouls, and some when unpunished. Also, as some others stated, where is your reaction about the yellow that Cesc got for stealing the ball cleanly. How about the yellow that Samaras didn’t get for kicking Alves from behind right in front of the ref. He got nothing but the leg. Sure, sometimes you just gotta suck it up and get up, but this is not MMA. Idiots like Pepe and those brits that love to break legs because the other players “were too fast” should be banned from football.
Since it seems you don’t have an official club affiliation, being informative and unbiased would go a long way.

    • Chris says:

@Miguel: Not making excuses, just pointing out that Neymar’s reaction is far more abhorrent in relation to the spirit of competitive contact sport.

  15. SL says:

He tried to step on his hand, then swiped at him and then banged his hip into him.

Yes Neymar is the biggest bitch in world football but Brown deserved to go.

  16. Jack Scurvy says:

That should be a yellow, not red. It was a bad call, plain and simple. I can’t help but wonder if Brown might have muttered something within the ref’s earshot that turned it from yellow to red. It wouldn’t be the first time.

Anyone who pigeon-holes all British players as being thugs is a deluded moron. Neymar is a gifted player, of course. Although why he chooses to tarnish himself by cheating is a sad mystery. It’s a reflection of his character.

  17. K says:

Someone should just stamp on him properly or give him a real leg breaker just like that great British footballer Zinadine Zidane.

  18. Amsterdamadrista says:

Well what do you expect of Neymar when the rest of his teammates are all full seasoned actors

  19. Neymar Jr says:

It’s violent conduct arsewipe whether there was contact (which there was) or not.

  20. Anabelle says:

Scott Brown is the perfect example of why physical attributes mean so little in football. He needs a brain.

  21. Coisty says:

Brown does this type of thing in every important match with both Celtic and Scotland. He either gets his marching orders or is ineligible to play the next game. He’s getting way too long in the tooth to carry on with this angry hothead man with too much attitude shit

  22. Jo says:

Brown looks mentally challenged. The shape of his head is like that of someone with down syndrome.

    • Anonymous says:

I think it’s you who is mentally challenged. Whilst using a disability to describe a footballer, which in itself abhorrent, you don’t even have the intelligence to get the term correct.
