Sergio Ramos isn’t exactly one to hold his tongue when it comes to speaking his mind, and the Real Madrid captain used his Champions League press conference to give Antoine Griezmann a bit of a lashing om Tuesday.
A few weeks ago, Griezmann gave an interview to AS in which he grumbled about not being nominated for the Ballon d’Or or the Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award, asserting that he is at a point in his career where he “already sits with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo”.
In turn, that notion was put to Ramos ahead of Real’s upcoming clash with Roma, with MARCA asking the defender if he thinks Griezmann is truly “eating at the same table” as either Messi or Ronaldo.
Both barrels were duly unloaded:
Ignorance can make you very bold.
When I hear this kid talk, I remember players like (Francesco) Totti, Raul, (Gianluigi) Buffon, Iker (Casillas), (Paolo) Maldini, Xavi or (Andres) Iniesta who go home to houses full of trophies but not a Ballon d’Or.
Everyone is free to express their opinion but I think he should take the advice of Cholo (Diego Simeone), (Diego) Godin or Koke – people who have values that compliment Atletico Madrid well.
But I have always said that he is a great player and I wish him the best.
Ooof. Right in the ego.
Ramos dismissively referring to Griezmann as “this kid” like he’s an old gruff, cigar-stained New Yoik boxing coach talking about a young slugger windmilling his way up out of the bareknuckle circuit and not just a fellow footballer five years older than his contemporary is pure deliciousness too.
