Cardiff City played host to Wolves on Friday evening as the top two sides in the Championship butted heads in south Wales.

Ruben Neves scored the only goal of the game to extend Wolves’ lead at the summit to nine points, but only after Cardiff squandered several chances to plunder an equaliser (or two) during a manic finale.

The Bluebirds won not one but two penalties beyond the 90th minute. However, they conspired to miss both as Gary Madine and Junior Hoilett both fluffed their respective spot-kicks.

With tempers at a pitch as the final whistle sounded, the two managers became embroiled in a heated exchange when Nuno forgot (either deliberately or otherwise) to shake Neil Warnock’s hand in customary fashion.

As fans of the English game will know, this is tantamount to heresy – and Warnock made his feelings on the matter abundantly clear while Nuno attempted to rectify his error…

Ranting after the match, Warnock confirmed – as if confirmation were needed – that he had refused an apology from the Wolves coach.

I don’t accept it at all. They’ve had a great win and I thought it showed a lack of class.

I went to shake his hand and he ran off. If that’s how they’re taught in Portugal then fair enough, but not in Britain.

I don’t want to speak to him. He can say anything after the game – I’m talking about when the whistle goes, what he should do, the etiquette, the manners, the class.

They’ve won the game. They should shake your hand and say unlucky or something, not run off like that and rub your noses in it. A disgrace.

Handshaking is a serious and austere ritual. Just ask Mark Hughes and the rest of the grim Flesh-Press Monastic Order.

‘Etiquette’, ‘manners’, ‘class’. Exactly the terms you think of when you hear the name Neil Warnock.
