Hardly the way Arsene Wenger would have wanted to celebrate his 1000th game in charge of Arsenal, was it? 4-0 down at half-time and with 10 men, it was a disastrous start for the Gunners. However, the biggest talking point was referee Andre Marriner’s decision to send off Kieran Gibbs for apparently stoping a shot with his hands. Except it was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who had committed the foul. Indeed, Oxlade-Chamberlain even tells the ref “It was me”, but Marriner was having none of it. I guess Marriner thinks all though mixed-race lads look the same.
Also, it wasn’t even a red card offence, as the ball was going wide and a deliberate handball is only deemed worthy of a red if it clearly prevents a goal being scored. An utter shambles all round!
