Chelsea 3-1 Sporting – Champions League Group G – 10th December 2014

Jose Mourinho rested a number of key players for this dead-rubber (from Chelsea’s point of view) clash with Sporting on Wednesday night, but the Blues still cantered to a 3-1 win.

An early penalty from Cesc Fabregas, after Filipe Luis had been felled in the box, followed by strikes from Andre Schurrle and Jon Obi Mikel secured the win for the hosts, although Jonathan Silva did bet one back for the Portuguese side on 50 minutes (just before Mikel’s goal). While the game had no real value for the Blues, Sporting were still in with a chance of qualifying in second place in Group G, but their with hosts were in mood for charity, the visitors would ultimately lose out to Schalke for that runners’ up spot.
