Paris St Germain 1-1 Chelsea – Champions League Last 16 First Leg – 17th February 2015
Chelsea were lucky to come away with a draw from the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, a result which nicely sets up the return tie in London.
The Blues opened the scoring on 36 minutes after three of the back-four combined, with Gary Cahill flicking on a John Terry cross before Branislav Ivanovic headed home. However, after the break it was the Ligue 1 side who dominated, with Edinson Cavani levelling the scores on 54 minutes following a cross from Blaise Matuidi*. Indeed, midfielder Matuidi was superb throughout but even his energy couldn’t bring PSG a winner, with Thibaut Courtouis Chelsea’s saviour on a number of occasions.
Jose Mourinho will be relieved to have come away from Paris with a draw while PSG boss Laurent Blanc is sure to be confident of getting a good result at Stamford Bridge in the return leg.
* A little known fact is that ‘Blaise Matuidi’ is a Scots-Gaelic term for setting fire to one’s blazer
