Chelsea captain John Terry has revealed that he’ll leave Stamford Bridge in the summer after not being offered a new contract by the club.

The 35-year-old joined Chelsea at the age of 14 and he became the bedrock on which the club enjoyed its most successful period.

Indeed, the former England international picked up four Premier League titles, five FA Cups and a Champions League trophy with the west Londoners in a glittering career.

However, now, Terry looks set to continue his career away from Stamford Bridge. Clearly disappointed on the absence of a new contract offer, he said:

Ideally I would have loved to stay, but the club’s moving in a different direction.

I couldn’t play for another Premier League club. It will be elsewhere for sure. I feel as though I’m in great nick, I’m playing great and I’ve got a couple of years to go. It’ll just be elsewhere.

The club will move on. No player is ever bigger than the club. No doubt they’ll sign one or two great centre-backs.

And so the end of a trophy-laden and sometimes controversial era looks set to an end, with the FA Cup and Champions League offering the captain/leader/legend a perfect way to finish his career on a high.

After that, MLS football beckons, we expect.

Slight update: It would appear that Terry isn’t being bumped out of the door quite yet, with a Chelsea spokesman insisting that talks between the club and the player are still ongoing.

John was advised that while no new deal was currently on the table, that situation could change in the coming months.

The club has the utmost respect for John and everything he has helped us achieve to date.

He is a fantastic servant of Chelsea and a superb captain. As such, the club will keep the channels of dialogue open.

Would Terry be willing to accept a reduced playing role at the Blues as he moves into his footballing dotage? Doubtful. Surely pride will be the deciding factor here.

That’s what a shit club do to it’s best player ever. You can’t expect something decent from Chelsea. Terry is not just a player for them, he’s a symbol. You don’t just offload a symbol. To me they are the perfect example of everything that is wrong with modern football.

He was looked after for 20 years and set up for life. The club stood by him when his behaviour was disgraceful. He kicks a ball for a living. Precisely how much more does he (or anyone) deserve?

A rare sighting of Terry’s kneecaps

Bruno – you are quite right. Terry is a symbol of Chelsea. He racially abused a black player, Chelsea fans racially abuse black members of the public.

He’s 35 and should be retiring, he’s clearly been on the decline for a couple of months. Chelsea aren’t throwing him aside and don’t owe him anything – he’s collected a decent wage for his entire career.
