Chelsea went down 3-0 away to Roma on Tuesday night, with the Blues becoming the first English side to lose in the Champions League this season.

A win would have put Chelsea through to the knockout stages. However, instead they were well beaten by Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

It took only 39 seconds for the hosts to open the scoring, with ex-Manchester City duo Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov combining to set up Stephen El Shaarawy, who fired home from long-range.

The visitors had a great chance to get themselves back into the game, only for Alvaro Morata to miss from close-range.

On 36 minutes, El Shaarawy netted his second of the game after Antonio Rudiger failed to cut out a long ball into the box.

Chelsea pushed for a goal themselves, but it was Roma who would nab the third and final goal of the game just after the hour-mark, with Diego Perotti producing a superb finish after a sloppy pass from Cesc Fabregas.

Perotti then had a great chance to score again after great work from Dzeko. However, the Argentinian midfielder fired over when he really should have scored.

The game would 3-0 to the Serie A side, a result which, thanks to Qarabag’s draw away to Atletico Madrid, sees the Blues still well placed to qualify for the last 16.

Chelsea are now second, a point behind leaders Roma but a healthy four points clear of third-placed Atletico.
