West Ham United 2-2 Everton (9-8 on Penalties) – FA Cup 3rd Round Replay – 13th January 2015

On a dramatic night in east London, West Ham came out on top in a magnificent FA Cup thrid round replay against Everton.

After a goalless first-half, West Ham striker Enner Valencia opened the scoring for the hosts before things went from bad to worse for the Toffees with the sending-off of Aiden McGeady for two bookable offences. However, rather than capitulate at the Boleyn Ground, the visitors railled with Kevin Mirallas at the heart of their revival. The Belgian fired home a fine free-kick on 82 minutes to put the tie into extra-time. Then, on 97 minutes, Mirallas produced a wonderful dribble in the Hammers’ box to set up Romelu Lukaku who bundled home from close-range.

Both sides then had chances to score before sub Carlton Cole netted from a James Tomkins knock-down to set up a tense penalty shoot-out. We’ve had a fair few marathon shoot-outs in the past couple of seasons and the Upton Park crowd witnessed yet another long and dramatic penalty drama, with Steven Naismith and Stewart Downing both missing. However, it was left to the goalkeepers who provide the finale, with Everton’s Joel Robles seeing his effort come back off the crossbar before West Ham’s Adrian converted the deciding spot-kick. What a fabulous game!
