Wayne Shaw, the former Sutton United goalkeeper who devoured a pie during a televised match, has been charged by the FA for breaching their rules on betting.

While sat on the bench, Shaw took a large pantomime bite into a pie during the latter stages of Sutton’s big FA Cup fifth-round tie against Arsenal back in February.

The stunt attracted wide derision after it was revealed to have been orchestrated by The Sun (Sutton’s one-off matchday sponsors) via their in-house gambling arm, Sun Bets, who had offered odds of 8/1 on the 45-year-old eating a pie at some point during the evening.

Despite insisting it was “just a bit of fun” and that he hadn’t made any money from the caper, Shaw promptly resigned from his post at The U’s before finding himself on the wrong end of an investigation by the Gambling Commission into whether or not his antics constituted a breach of betting regulations.

A bit of fun it may well have been, but it was still spot-fixing and spot-fixing is naughty naughty.

The FA have released a statement this afternoon confirming that Shaw has been charged with both “intentionally influencing a football betting market” and bringing the game into disrepute.

He now has until 6pm on Friday 21st July to respond to both charges.

Never has one steak pie back-fired so badly.

Great to see the FA is tackling the important problems in football, spot-fixing a pie on the bench.

    Stay classy FA.

John Terry not being investigated for similar? He knew there were odds being given for him being subbed on the 26th min in his last game. Orchestrated the same…
