I’m not a massive fan of the Olympic sitcom 2012, however, it’s spoof take on the London games is looking increasingly realistic by the day. The North Korean women’s football team were the latest victims of some dreadful incompetence, when the big screens around the ground (for their clash with Colombia at Hampden Park) showed the North Korean players next to a South Korean flag.

This rather massive gaffe didn’t go down too well with the North Koreans, who promptly walked off the pitch in protest before the kick-off. Eventually they were coaxed back on, before going on to win the game 2-0.

Olympic organisers Locog said:

“Ahead of the women’s football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag.

“Clearly this is a mistake. We will apologise to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again.”

Somehow I don’t think it’ll be the last balls-up we’ll see this summer.

This doesn’t bode well. Apparently they’re in the same group for table tennis so I can guarantee that one country is getting bombed by the end of the olympics.

Wouldn’t at all be surprised if this has been done on purpose. I mean a fast check would have shown you which flag is the correct one. Besides how fucking thick can you be? Is there no one in that particular committee who knows what a North Korean flag is?

This might not seem like a big deal but its like showing the Hand of Ulster Flag for Republic of Ireland.

@ Toz–A better question would be, “Is there no one in that particular committee who knows that Korea DPR (Democratic People’s Republic) is also North Korea, despite not being a democratic nation?”

It’s truly amazing this sort of shit can happen. I’m sure I read on the BBC site recently about how they’d gone to extremes to make sure this doesn’t happen, following things like this that had happened before.

It mentioned that thing recently, I think it was Kazakhstan and they played the Borat music/lyrics instead of the proper one. I think the article said flags/anthems etc were checked more than once. And then they mess up on the first day.
