Over the course of the last 15 days, Benfica saw Porto overtake them to win the Liga Portuguesa with just two fixtures left after topping the table for almost the entire season before that and, added to their domestic misery, they also had Chelsea pip them to the Europa League title courtesy of Branislav Ivanovic’s last-minute winner just four days beforehand.
Yesterday’s Taca de Portugal (Portuguese Cup) final gave The Eagles the chance to salvage something from their disastrous season, but despite leading 1-0 for almost 80 minutes of the game, they still somehow managed to lose 2-1 to Vitoria Guimaraes after falling apart in the final stages…again.
After the game, an irate Oscar Cardozo (who was subbed off with 20 minutes remaining) showed the world just who he thought was responsible for Benfica’s crappy treble, angrily shoving coach Jorge Jesus and giving the Sandi Toksvig-a-like an earful on the pitch…
Bad form Oscar, bad form. Never question a man with hair as ornate as Jorge Jesus. That guy obviously “knows” people. At least someone out there still loves the immaculately-coifed Benfica coach…
Elsewhere, noted Portuguese football expert Jeremy Clarkson had a theory as to why Benfica tanked so damn hard this season…
