Ever-so-subtle suspicions of corruption are being leveled Kazakhstan-wards this afternoon as, with IL Hødd due to play Kazakh club FC Aktobe in the Europa League preliminary qualifying rounds, the country’s embassy announced that the Norwegian side’s two best players wouldn’t be allowed to play after convenientlyhaving their Visa applications rejected.

Coming into the second leg of the tie with a 1-0 aggregate  lead, Hødd players Akeem Latifu and Sivert Heltne Nilsen have both been denied entry to Kazakhstan for what the club are calling “no good reason”, with the club’s coach, Lars Arne Nilsen (who is actually Sivert Heltne Nilsen’s father) telling TV2:

“I find it sad that we can’t go [to Kazakhstan] with our best player. I do not know very much, and will say little. People can draw their own conclusions, then we will express ours a little later.

“What can I say? We have applied for a visa properly, we were told that everything looked good and then suddenly we are told that [the two players] cannot be with us, what do you think about that?

“It is very strange, we have not received any explanation as to why they cannot go. They know their football at the Kazakh embassy.”

Hødd goalkeeper Andreas Lie also added:

“Of course it weakens our chances. They are two key players who must play and we can only speculate why [they can’t].

“We have offered our thoughts, but I think I should be careful not to say too much before we travel down, so we get back home alive.”

Maybe someone needs to fill us in here, but we just can’t see what could possibly be construed as shady about that? Everything sounds completely above board to us, though we’re a bit naive like that.

  2. Bek says:

I find it a bit biased that there is no mention that 2 of Aktobe’s best players were denied Norwegian visas prior to the first leg. They were eventually given visas, but with less then 24 hours till kickoff and consequently didn’t play.

  3. saddasdsa says:

what u forgot to mention is that visas for two Kazakh players were refused for the first game by Norway – no sign of corruption there?

    • High Five says:

The 2 Aktobe players from Usbekistan were not denied visa. The embassy needed more time to approve their visa as there are some special rules for Peoples from Usbekistan entering Norway.
The Coach of FC Aktobe asked the Hødd chairman if he could Call the embassy and ask if they could give the two players a “special treatment”. Hødd chairman replied that he couldnt do that because it doesnt work that way in Norway. If he had asked for “special treatment” (corruption) he would have been caught på the police, and lost his job.
The Aktobe Coach replied he will make visa-problem for Akeem Latifu and Sivert Heltne Nilsen. And just that happened! Does the Coach also work in the embassy?

-The Aktobe players didnt have legal papers. It took time to fix needed papers.

-The Hødd players had all the needed papers.

Corruption was only done by the Aktobe side.

  4. Chris says:

@Bek and saddasdsa: Fair enough, I had no idea that was the case.

  5. pod says:

they were rejected because they didnt have proper passports… the players from aktobe that is

  6. Tom says:

In the first leg 2 key Aktobe players were refused visas to Norway and couldn’t travel with their team. Can you call Norway government corrupted as well?

  7. Dauren says:

I think it is just reply of our (Kazakh) authorities. Whether they was so offensed after the first incedent with visa of Norway or just wanted to show who is host. But anyway I assume it is not fair regardless any situation at the first match. FC Aktobe can win this kind of rival by own (look up results and statistics of ball possession, shouts, etc.). To be honest the goalkeeper of Hodd showed his unrespectiveness to Kazakhs, and his comments just show his politelessness and his low level of awareness concerning the situation in whe world (seemingly the part of the country name “-stan” is for him like stereotype of horror and backwardness). Of course, our country is not so high developed like Norway, but no one of players and coaches of our team can let himself to talk that way in terms of respect to host. There is such a big discourse about the visa problem, but also I can remind about a remark of Norway team’s coach about a “Going to Kazakhstan in costume of Borat” right after drawing. What is it? Why there is a double standards for 2 teams in that press area? P.S.: The village is village no matter where is it.

  8. Soccer says:

Chris Wright, if you publish articles using the word “corruption” then why don’t you write the full information, not only one side of the story. Why don’t you write that two Aktobe players were refused Norvegian entry visa before the first leg match? Why didn’t you call that norvegian act as corrupted? you say you had no idea…i thought journalists must check all the facts thourougly before publishing something worldwide!!! Otherwise this may result in international problems…

  9. Andy Carroll's Ponytail says:

@Chris:I’ll answer the last question for you.

@Soccer: Read comment no. 4 you numbskull. Or do you need Borat to translate it for you?

    • Soccer says:

Andy Carroll’s Ponytail, you must be a secretary of Chris Wright? nice to meet ya! ))) hey Borat is rather old-fashioned subject already. Or is that all you know about other countries? )
Though… actually mentioning borat in all articles about Kazakhstan may be a litmus paper of one’s intelligence. I know yours now ))))))

  10. Borat says:

Chris u’re fucking bitch. IL Hodd’s goalkeeper is fucking bithce too. u were playing in good country (kazakhstan), its not afganistan or Irak. If u dont know where is Kazakhstan, open map and u can see the great land on world map called as Kazakhstan. But your country is so Fucking bithes than Kazakhstan

  15. hereistheliferairai says:

How can some people here defend the 2 Aktobe players who didnt have legal passports, against 2 Hødd players who had legal passports?

  16. High Five says:

The two Aktobe players from Usbekistan didnt have proper passports and they normally use 3months to fix a new passport for people(even footballers) from Usbekistan. But the Norwegian Embassy in Kazakhstan gave these two special treatment. They fixed it in a few days, unforunately not in time before the team started their journey to Norway. Whos to blame? Its the clubs fault that they didnt have all documents ready in time. Not Hødd or Norwegian Embassy in Kazakhstan.
Hødds foreign player Akeem Latifu(Nigeria) also needed extra documents to get visa, but Hødd had all documents ready from day one! They checked up with the embassy to check if everything was in order and the Kazakhstans Embassy in Oslo confirmed that everything was OK for every player and supporters. But the day before take off the Embassy
called and said that our two best players was denied visa to Kazakhstan. Also two supporters and the referee from Switserland was denied visa. So UEFA sent a Turkish referee instead. Hmmm…

When FC Aktobe were in Norway, oficials from FC Aktobe threatened Hødd that they would make Visa problems for Akeem Latifu. And then it happens even if the Kazakhstan Embassy have confirmed that everything are OK for Akeem Latifu, Sivert Heltne Nilsen (son of the coach) and the rest of the club. Hmmmm…
The coach said a joke like: “Maybe we should play in blue Borat dresses” when he got the message that Hødd are going to play in Kazakhstan. The Kazakhstan press and the people took this as an assault and called it racism. Come on! Dont you have sense of humour in Kazakhstan? He appologised to the Kazakh people when the reactions came. He didnt want to hurt anyone.
Maybe his son would have got visa if he didnt say this joke? Revenge?

The Norwegian Embassy in Kazakhstan did their job.
The Kazakhstan Embassy in Norway denied visa to 4 Norwegians(even if everything was OK) after pressure/corruption from FC Aktobe.

When Hødd entered the Aktobe Airport oficials from FC Aktobe and Kazakhstan Football Association came up to a Hødd oficial and said we can fix Latifu and S.Nilsens visa here right now. (!?!?)

Since Hødd is a small club UEFA close their eyes and let FC Aktobe go on to the next round by cheating.

    Facts:
Norway is one the countries with almost no corruption.
Kazakhstan hava a big problem with corruption.

  17. High Five says:

  18. Gaz says:

There is a big difference in the two cases, the two Usbekistanian Aktobe players did not hold a valid international passport when they applied for visa the first time. When they finally provided a valid passport, they gottheir visa applications approved. This beeing to late to travel, is no other than the players/Aktobe to blame!

Hødd’s visa applications were sent to th Kasakhstan embassy in almost 2 weeks before travelling. The embassy confirmed all documents were OK. Still they got 2 rejectsons, without giving any reason…

Corruption? I haveno other suggestion… Fair Play? Nooot!

  19. Soccer says:

Stop justifying Norway please. Stop saying this bullshit about invalid passports of two Uzbek players. This is not true. Officially the reason why Norway didn’t give them a visa was that for Uzbek citizens there were different rules for obtaining it. But this is a clear bullshit because for Norway such countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan are the same and for Kazak citizens they apply the same rules in obtaining visa as for Uzbeks. So why they didn’t give visa immediately two to BEST players if rest of players(kazakhs) got it. So the real and unofficial reason was that Hodd intentionally did not let them enter. two footballers of Hodd who didn’t get the visa is another case. For nigerian footballer (as for almost all africans)it is difficult to enter any part of the world, so he had to get more documents to get visa, obviously not all was submitted so he was refused. As for the norvegian player (coach’s son) there were also some problems with his docs but Kazak side informed Hodd when they still stayed in Norway, that he can come and get visa in airport. If coach didn’t took him in Kazakhstan, so it’s the problem only of the coach.
And stop saying these fairy tales about Norway has no corruption! The whole world knows about terrible things that norvegian BARNEVERNET does. So do not invent myths about non corrupted beautiful Norway. It is not perfect at all as you try to present it. In the era of internet people know more then you can imagine

  21. Soccer says:

I am not gonna read any article about this issue anymore, especially norvegian ones. Not interested anymore )))). Hodd is already history for Aktobe. So you just wasted your time )))

  22. englishman says:

The comments here are totally ridiculous…How on earth can you possibly accuse Norwegians of corruption in retaliation to the Kazakh visa decision. Have you ever been to Norway? I guess not. Their politicians don’t wear Hublot watches and own private jets. Kazakhstan is corrupt through and through!!! Now the racial insults are another matter and I agree Europeans can be up their own behinds sometimes. The Kazakh people are amongst the most welcoming and hospitable in the world and it’s a shame idiots on both sides whether it’s corrupt politicians or ignorant racists who spoil things.
