As we pithily noted last night, the World Cup opening ceremony sounded an awful lot like a shopping trolley falling down an endless flight of concrete stairs due to the risible sound quality – though even the hissy sound quality and dodgy mics saved us from having to sit through Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and that other woman’s official dirge, so at least it served some purpose.

Amid the myriad fails on show (two of the released doves dying after colliding with the stadium, Pitbull’s tiny trousers, etc), the biggest perhaps came when, in the spirit of inclusion, the flag of every competing nation appeared on a giant ball in the middle of the pitch in Sao Paulo.

The only problem was, the organisers saw fit to use the flag of Niger (a nation who are not competing at the World Cup) over that of Nigeria (who very much are).

What a difference a couple of extra vowels make to a Google search.

Kudos to Twitter user @lawseyitfc who spotted the balls-up…

Bless them. They just can’t get anything right, can they?

Who cares about Nigeria anyway? It’s not like they have TVs to watch it.

@Brad — I thought twice about responding to your racist twat remarks. But, as they say, three’s the charm.

I’m not sure how you were able to make your cheap transistor radio read, let alone respond, to a post on PIES. Maybe you toddled over to your neighbor’s trailer to steal a KEYSTONE LIGHT and then poked this off, one letter at a time, on his mother’s cell phone or something like that ((after all, despite all evidence to the contrary, there IS civilization where you least expect it.))

As for TV’s, who needs a TV when you can stream all the games on your computers. After all, computers are in abundance in Nigeria….as I’m sure you know…since how ELSE were you able to help those oppressed Kings of Nigeria recover their fortunes from fascist peril?

    Twat!

    Troll!

    Bellend!!

    I’m predicting Nigeria 2 Iran 0.

    Go Super Eagles!!
