“SORRY GUYS!”

Though England Women did go on to fight their way back to a 1-1 draw against Belgium in Friday night’s Euro 2017 qualifier, the opening goal of the game was nothing short of calamitous.

Unfortunately, England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley was to blame as her prolonged hesitation and subsequent botched clearance on the edge of the box allowed Belgian forward Janice Cayman in to roll the ball into a completely vacant net…

Mercifully, Jill Scott popped up with an 84th-minute equaliser to just about spare Bardsley’s blushes and keep the Lionnesses in second place in Group 7, one point behind Belgium at the top.

I actually cried with laughter when I saw this on the BBC…I really enjoy some women’s sports ( eg tennis ) but the media’s efforts to present women’s football as being worth watching is tiresome. If that is sexist, I don’ t care.

Soccer is by far the most watchable women’s sport. There are countless other examples of GK blunders by men on this site, too.

I think the point Mary Holmes is making is that at a comparable ranking level (I think England’s womens team are number 3/4 in the world at the time of writing?) the perceived quality of play in mens football is probably higher than in womens. Thus, whilst womens football may indeed be the most watchable womens sport (which is a matter for debate), Mary would prefer to watch Englands men football team disgrace themselves rather than Englands women
