Marlon King has been jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman in a London nightclub, then breaking her nose after she spurned his advances. Hmm, nice guy.

This just in from PA:

“The former Wigan striker, who was celebrating both his wife’s pregnancy and scoring a winning goal hours earlier, was repeatedly ‘cold-shouldered’ by women revellers in London’s packed Soho Revue Bar last December.

“When a slightly-built university student became the latest to recoil from his touch, he lost his temper and in an outburst of ‘completely gratuitous violence’ lashed out, ‘smashing’ her to the floor.

His single clenched fist blow was so powerful that two other revellers – one of them holding on to his arm – were also sent flying. While bouncers moved in to restrain the striker, friends rushed to the aid of his victim.

As she was helped to her feet, blood poured from her shattered nose, London’s Southwark Crown Court heard.”

On hearing news of the verdict, Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan confirmed that his club have decided to sack King. “We have to follow the rules and regulations and we have given him 14 days notice that his contract will be cancelled,” Whelan said.

“He is absolutely sacked. We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and as far as we are concerned he is finished football with Wigan Athletic.”

Hopefully all other clubs feel the same way.

    Good riddance. And thank god Dave Whelan has sacked him, unlike how Newcastle treated that other lowlife, Joey Barton

    They seem to think they are a level above mere mortals. Money does strange things to tiny minds.

    The bloke is a waste of space and I hope he never gets to play again. I agree with Dan too, Newcastle should’ve just sacked Barton no questions asked and I’m a toon fan…..and F**k off Ashley trying to change the name of St James’ Park too. You lot must be loving it laughing at the shambles that is the toon at the minute

    hear hear dave whelan. what a cunt.

  7. SPOT says:

    Dave Whelan is a cunt and King is a even bigger cunt.
    Whelan said he didn’t know the nature of the offence until King was found guilty. If you believe that you’ll believe anything.
    Bunch of cunts.

    In my opinion, he’s a good player and shouldn’t have been sacked for this drunken outburst (who’s never punched somebody in the face ?). They could have kept him out of the payroll while he’s in jail for instance. But maybe there are other reasons we don’t know … this article doesn’t really help, we’re left asking:
    – when did that happen ?
    – what is the length of King’s contract with Wigan ?
    – when did he move there ?
    – was he a regular starter ?
    – …
    it’s not really a comprehensive, unbiased piece of journalism Ollie

  9. Chringle says:

    @Jonathan Jewel: He punched a woman in the face because she wouldn’t fiddle with his balls like Bowie does in Labyrinth.

  10. Jonathan Jewel says:

    Chringle, I wondered what you meant until I googled Labyrinth and come across this:
    “David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King: He is able to create, seemingly from thin air, small crystal orbs which are used to work magic. He is shown contact juggling them throughout the film”

    you wanted to let me know that Marlon King is some kind of magician,
    or the real Goblin King ?

    I also found some answers by the way:

    – the assault occured on Sunday, 7 december 2008;
    – King joined Wigan from Watford in January 2008 on a three and a half year contract (endind july 2011);
    – King was on loan at Hull City when it happened (20 apps, 5 goals);
    – he was loaned to Middlesbrough during the second part of the 08/09 season (13 apps, 2 goals);
    – King returned to Wigan in the summer after his loan spell ended. He mainly found himself on the bench since then.

    Whelan (Wigan chairman) said: “I do personally regret the day we signed him. I always thought his heart and soul wasn’t in being a professional footballer. We loaned him out last year, we were trying to off-load him this year and couldn’t.”

    King had fallen out with Wigan and he had 21 months left on his contract (worth 40 grand a week). They just have found an excuse to get rid of him for free.

    He would just have had 3 months left on his contract when out of jail in april 2011 anyway. It made more sense to sack him than to suspend him and wait for his return.

    Anyway, King’s agent said plans to appeal against both his sentence and his sacking were in place, declaring the matter a case of mistaken identity.

    This story is nowhere near its end

    @jonathanjewel I dont really understand the point you are making, are you defending a man who has a number of criminal convictions including stealing a car in his playing days with Gillingham and his lastest highlight was punching a woman and breaking her nose when she said no to his sexual advances just before he stated ‘dont you know who I am, Im a millionaire’, granted there could be other elements that havnt been released but somethings are undefendable.
