Of all the myriad enemies Donald Trump has made over the years, you may be surprised to learn that one of them used to play in midfield for Leeds United.

According to documents stumbled upon by the New York Times last year, Trump was once sued by none other than Olivier Dacourt.

The lawsuit in question came about when in 2011, a property development in which Dacourt had invested fell through – despite Trump being a great super business genius, the world’s best great super business genius.

Indeed, the former Inter Milan, Roma and France midfielder made a significant investment in ‘Trump SoHo’, a 46-storey luxury condo hotel project in Lower Manhattan.

The project was marketed aggressively to potential investors overseas, where exchange rates were favourable and the Trump brand carried a certain cachet.

Many early buyers were from Europe, including a French former soccer star, Olivier Dacourt, who put down a deposit of $460,400 on a $2.3million unit.

The development was brashly described as a “brilliant $370million work of art” and “an awe-inspiring masterpiece” by Trump himself – somewhat out of character, we know – but the lofty sales figures promoted heavily beforehand subsequently failed to materialise.

At that juncture, Dacourt, along with the rest of his fellow investors, filed a lawsuit that Trump eventually settled by agreeing to refund 90% of the deposits – though he and his co-defendants admitted no wrongdoing in the process.

Dacourt has since eked out a more traditional post-football career in media, working on French television as a pundit-for-hire.

Trump… well, who knows what the hell’s going on there?
