What to say? Fulham journeyed so far, and for so long (since July 2009), and came up millimetres short – how desperately sad for Roy Hodgson and co. Atletico Madrid were the better side on the night, however, with Diego Forlan and Kun Aguero (a brilliantly well-balanced pair) the clear difference between two sides of similar ability.

Is the final the worst match of all to lose? Probably, but then for Fulham fans the memory of famous wins against Shakhtar and Juventus and Hamburg will never be erased. What a fantastic campaign it has been.

With a neutral hat on, I’m happy for Atleti too – living in the giant shadow of Real can’t be easy, and it’s good to see them emerge in such triumphant fashion. You could really see how much it meant to Dr. House and his players, not to mention their ecstatic fans.

To end on a bitter note, one might argue that the seeds of Fulham’s defeat were planted somewhat in the unfair, patronising treatment of Diego Forlan by the English media when he was at Man Utd. Forlan was never given a fair shot in his time at United, and you know there was an element of “I’ll show those bastards” in his superb performances against Liverpool and then the Cottagers. And who can blame him? I bet his revenge tastes damn fine.

Fulham gave as good as they got. To say atletico were the better side is unfair because fulham played them off the park for most of the second half and the first half of extra time. Atletico got two pretty fortuitous goals. Aguero did damage when he had the ball but fulham starved him for large portions of the game. But for a miskick and a flick off a defender fulham might have won the game. Fair f*cks to them. Fair play to forlan too. Although I don’t think it ever would have worked out at united for him. He never seemed comfortable with all the pressure he was under and it only grew when he didn’t score for ages at the start. If you think he was trying to prove something against liverpool and fulham then what is he proving when he is banging in the goals in la liga. Maybe the same thing.

Atletico were always going to be too strong. Fulham played valiantly in the final, but not well, alot of missed short passes.

Aguero seemed a very good young player but with a bit of an attitude problem.

Also, am i the only one who would score Atletico’s second as an own goal. From my perspective Forlan had flicked that shot welllllll wide.

    My Fulham-based conclusions:

    1. Dickson Etuhu is an insanely limited player – but gets in the way of the opposition a lot, therefore just about justifying his selection.

    2. Chris Baird was my MOTM. Best I’ve ever seen him play.

    3. Brede Hangeland is very uncomfortable on the ball. Something that will need to be knocked out of him if he is to join Arsenal.

    4. Saying he’d been there before, Danny Murphy looked the most nervous man out there in the first 30mins.

    5. Erik Nevland is definitely not suited to the ‘big man’ role.
