Fulham defender Alfie Mawson is expected to miss this Sunday’s game against Tottenham after aggravating the knee injury that has been limiting his involvement since the turn of the year.

As confirmed by Cottagers boss Claudio Ranieri, the centre-back managed to do himself a discourtesy while putting his boots on.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Ranieri explained the state of play:

It was a very strange injury. He (Mawson) just changed his boots. It was unbelievable.

He needs more time. How long? I don’t know.

We can only assume that something went twang while Mawson was bending over to tie his laces or something equally slapstick.

Still, the net result is that Fulham will be one £20million defender light for the foreseeable future as they continue in their (obviously doomed) battle against relegation.
