In a move that echoes Radiohead’s innovative marketing of “In Rainbows”, Eidos is selling the digital version of Championship Manager 2010 on a “Pay What You Want” basis. A press release says:
“From the time the shop goes live today (August 18th) until midnight on September 10th, you can pre-order the digital download version of Championship Manager 2010 from www.champmanstore.com and on the day of release, September 11th, you can then download it direct from the website.”
More details in this video:

I must admit I’ve yet to be sucked into the sleep-deprived world of Championship Manager. But I know plenty of fans who swear by its addictive properties. None of them have girlfriends (or indeed lives) but hey, that’s the price you pay if you want to succeed at CM.
Good to see a videogame company trying out a new payment model like this, although I did notice that several disgruntled customers had left messages saying that there’s a problem with the website, so – as always with online purchases – it’s a case of buyer beware.
How much would you pay for CM 2010? There’s a recession on, so I’d pay a fiver. Paying 1p seems a bit too weasely.

I’m not sure if CM fans are the right demographic for a risky stunt like this, I hope it doesn’t come back to haunt Eidos.

  2. David Allison says:

They’d have to prise me away from Football Manager first, and I don’t hold much hope for them as my wife still hasn’t managed that yet…

Offer a drug addict free drugs and he’ll take them.
Offer a champ man addict free champ man and he’ll take it.
This is a bad move, fortunately real fans of football play Football Manager because it is miles better, if a great deal more complex.
I heard somewhere that Football Manager Sim addiction had been cited as a reason for divorce in 36 cases. I’m honestly not surprised.

yeh, i think thts the problem eidos are trying to combat- i guess they no they will make a massive loss with this but they think tht by giving away their game free alot of cheap people will use there product and hopefully it will increase their popularity to the days of CM4 meaning wen they charge next yr they may be competin with FM which it clearly isnt atm. i think it could be a very wise move, especially bearing in mind how anal the new one person one disc system is for FM.

Well I am a BIG CM fan, and I must say I will be paying $40 Australian for it, I indeed have no life or girlfriend (although my mates have kindly offered to look for a girl who likes Champman for me, unfortunately no such thing exists) the new version is great, and it doesn’t crash like FM. top game and I will be paying a reasonable price for it. remember Radiohead got a lot more than they thought they would get with their ‘rainbows’ deal

    Nah! I like FIFA more.
Its manager mode might not be as manager but I like to play FIFA not manage football that much.

  7. will says:

well i’m not exactly a CM fan seeing as FM is so much better but for £2.50 i’ll definately give it a go.
plus it comes out before FM10 does so it’ll at least get me ready for the next one
