Here it is people: the knock-down, cut-price England squad that Roy Hodgson has selected for the supremely poorly-timed friendly against Italy in Switzerland on Wednesday evening – presenting, the third best national side in world football…

GK: Joe Hart, John Ruddy, Jack Butland

DF: Gary Cahill, Ryan Bertrand, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Steven Caulker, Kyle Walker

MF: Frank Lampard, Jack Rodwell, Michael Carrick, Adam Johnson, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Tom Cleverley, Jake Livermore

FW: Daniel Sturridge, Andy Carroll, Jermaine Defoe, Ashley Young

England’s Jake Livermore. I’ll say that again: England’s. Jake. Livermore.

Amazing stuff, clearly a world-class team right there. Bertrand has been quality in the 2 games he has played in the history of his career, and Andy Caroll? The bloke is pure footballing brilliance, the way he combines his height and his pornstar hair-do is nothing short of genius.

  2. Graham says:

I like how Carrick FINALLY gets a bloody call-up for England right before United’s season kicks off, when he very well could have been an integral part of the Euro squad.

  3. Jack says:

A bit harshh on Livermore, looks like a promising young player to be..

  5. Thunder says:

No Rooney makes me happy. It’s a friendly so I hope we try out something different and perhaps (dun dun duuuuun) not play 442?

  6. Mok says:

    Not too bad I think.

  7. Glenn says:

Can’t think why the country hates the media. Hodgson sticks out a young experimental squad, and you’re mocking them already. Give them a chance WAATP. Seriously. What are you, the Daily Mail or something?

  8. js94 says:

And that team is why were the 3rd best in the world.

  9. max says:

    where is rooney ?

  10. adhikapp says:

I was as shocked as anyone when I saw Jake Livermore’s name up in the squad. Can’t believe Huddlestone got beaten to an England place by him. But yeah, what could possibly go wrong with Livermore?

  11. Frost says:

I like the Adam Johnson call up…

  12. lisa says:

@glenn….i think its mainly because hodgsons a throwback cant-field-a-tactical game to save his life nob and whoever didnt realize that before the euros is having bad feelings now. if someone talented chose an experimental young squad we’d all feel better.

  13. Bruno says:

Just throwing it out there, the Italy squad is pretty interesting too. Super young with 9 new caps. No Juve or Napoli players, no Cassano, no Montolivo, no DiNatale or Thiago Motta. Balotelli is the third most capped player after DeRossi and Aquilani. That means he’d be captain if the two go off in the second half. Shame no Borini and Insigne

Andrea Consigli (Atalanta), Mattia Perin (Genoa), Salvatore Sirigu (Paris St Germain); Ignazio Abate (AC Milan), Francesco Acerbi (AC Milan), Davide Astori (Cagliari), Federico Balzaretti (Roma), Mattia De Sciglio (AC Milan), Daniele Gastaldello (Sampdoria), Angelo Obinze Ogbonna (Torino), Federico Peluso (Atalanta); Alberto Aquilani (Fiorentina), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Alessandro Diamanti (Bologna), Antonio Nocerino (AC Milan), Andrea Poli (Sampdoria), Ezequiel Schelotto (Atalanta), Marco Verratti (Paris Saint Germain); Mario Balotelli (Man City), Mattia Destro (Roma), Stephan El Shaarawy (AC Milan), Manolo Gabbiadini (Atalanta)

  14. bill says:

What’s your problem with Livermore? He’s been solid for Spurs so far and he’ll be getting lots more playing time this year. You all loved the Ox but you can’t stand Livermore? A bit biased, and more than a bit harsh.

  15. Del says:

Oh God, after Euro 2012, I will probably live my life in dread of any England/Italy clash.
