Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Swansea City v Southampton - Liberty Stadium

The England squad for the upcoming friendly against Scotland at Wembley on August 14th has just been announced and the big news is that Southampton man Rickie Lambert has been given the nod by Roy Hodgson after the 31-year-old striker scored 15 goals for the Saints in his first tilt at Premier League football last season.

Willy Zaha has also been included, along with Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney despite missing most of the pre-season schedule with a succession of minor injuries.

The squad in full:

Ben Foster, Joe Hart, John Ruddy

Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker

Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Jack Wilshere, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, Wilfried Zaha,

Jermain Defoe, Rickie Lambert, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck

The Auld Enemy must be piddling themselves in sheer terror at that little lot. Is it our imagination or is the England squad getting weaker and weaker with every passing fixture?

Still, massive congrats to Lambert – you can’t argue that he deserves his chance, especially if the likes of Jay Bothroyd and Kevin Davies were both deemed worthy of being allowed a go.

If even that lump Kevin Davies can get a cap then Rickie Lambert should be on the plane to Brazil next year. Don’t even get me started on Jay Bothroyd or Francis Jeffers.

@Wilson to be fair Davies had some very good seasons with Bolton in the top flight

Why the hell are they playing this game. It always amazes me that an international break the week the Premier League season starts is considered a good idea. FFS!

its not just you Chris, this squad is getting weaker and weaker. Remember after the 2010 WC debacle and we were promised a new generation of players would be ushered in? what the hell happened to that?

  6. Joe says:

They are playing this game as part of The FA’s 150th aniversary, an event which has more signifigance than any of the opening fixtures the following weekend. An England v Scotland game (the original international fixture) is unfortunately so rare that it should’ve been given a better slot in the footballing calender.
The real question should be, why the hell are they playing league football around this fixture?

  7. Wilson says:

    @ Hull tiger

True, but Davies was more renowned for fouling the hell out of anything that moves on a football pitch than anything else.

  8. John says:

The best England squad in modern times was in WC 2006. It has gotten weaker since then.

Delighted to see Ashley Cole, Michael Carrick, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney in the squad – I know they’ve played like twenty or thirty or forty times for England before, but I’m really really sure we’re going to learn something new about them by playing them again this time!
