Youngsters Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend have been rewarded by their impressive early season form with a call-up to the England senior squad for the vital World Cup qualifying clashes with Moldova and Ukraine.

Barkley has impressed in Roberto Martinez’s Everton side of late while Tottenham’s fleet-footed winger Townsend has obviously benefited from last season’s loan spell with QPR.

Here’s the full squad. Thoughts…?

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

  1. Chris says:

Nice to see Roy giving “flavour of the week” in-form youngsters a chance to properly embed themselves in the set-up again.

One of the most encouraging aspects of his managerial tenure so far.

  2. Alex says:

Ashley Young though?? Kill me now.

  3. Kin Ju Bing says:

England will be lucky to qualify with the poor players they do have now.
Their goalkeepers and defenders are particularly not good enough.

  4. Alex - oz says:

Well pleased about Barkley and Townsend, I have watched Barkley in the first two matches on the season and he is doing really well, that goal would have boosted his confidence as well. I think he is breath of fresh air to this England set up, even though not ready to start for England yet, I’d love to see him get some minutes if we are winning one of these games comfortably or in the next friendly. I also watched Jack Wilkshits 15 minute cameo last match for arsenal, and I don’t understand why everyone regards him so highly, he is awful! Also with Joe Harts recent and current ( Last season/this season) drop in form when will Roy send him a message and drop him, give Forster a go, or even foster he is much better even though injured than Hart at the moment.

@ Kin Ju Bing – you forgot to mention the forwards as well.

  6. Inno says:

Good to see Big Fraser Forster getting another chance. I really think he should have been given a nod in one of the friendlies. He was tearing it up in the Champions League last season, the Spanish papers called him the Great Yellow Wall for how he performed against Barca.

  7. Mr Sensible says:

And this is the problem with England.

No doubt Barkley will be a great player in a few years but you have to earn your right in the England squad. At least Zaha isn’t there, another player who will most likely become a very good player but just because he plays for United doesn’t give him an automatic spot in the England sqaud.

We’re gonna end up playing Lampard in Gerrard in the middle anyway so might as well all just go home and cry.

  8. Gazz says:

Would have liked to have seen Aaron Ramsey get a call up. Much improved this season…

  9. Tron says:

@Gazz Aaron Ramsey is Welsh. The same reason Bale doesn’t get called up.

  10. Jimjam says:

@ Gazz hahah! – I for one would love to see James Morrison given the nod alongside Ramsey.

Agreed about Forster, sad to see him leave the Toon, but understand why.

  11. Michael says:

    Ramsey is from Wales

  12. Wilson says:

Who the fuck in their right mind would pick Ashley Young? He’s done fuck all(except diving) since scoring a beaut against Arsenal in that 8-2 match.

  13. Andy Carroll's Ponytail says:

@Gazz: He IS called up..for the WELSH squad!

  14. fjdmc says:

@ mr sensible, who do you want us to play? You don’t want youth but you don’t want the established players either. This is the problem with england fans, too much moaning, no solutions.

For me you look to the future now and squeeze in as many of the young players who you intend to start in brazil. My XI for Brazil:

    Hart
    Walker, cahill, jones, cole
    Barkley or gerrard, wilshere, Chamberlain
    Zaha sturridge, welbeck

  15. Rory says:

Sterling has done the square root of fuck all since last November or so (on the pitch at least), in there solely because he plays for Liverpool.

  16. Lewis says:

But who else is there to pick instead of Sterling? Lennon and Chamberlain are injured.

I would like to see Baines starting at Left back. I know Cole has done us well over the years but it’s time for Baines to take over.
