Not that it comes as much of a surprise given the rumblings and general dissonance that have been emanating from the Irish camp of late, but this morning the FAI have announced that Giovanni Trapattoni has left his role as manager of the Republic of Ireland manager.

No statement has yet been issued, but ITV Football are reporting that Trapattoni has agreed to resign following an “amicable meeting” with the FAI earlier today.

Well, that’s the end of the Trap era. No doubt he’s left Irish football in a healthier state than inherited back in 2008. The man’s done a fine (if overly cautious at times) job and we’re hard-pressed to think of an available successor who’d be able to take this Irish side any further though Leeds’ Brian McDermott is being mentioned in passing.

As for Trap, now aged a stately 74, you’d have to assume that retirement is in the pipeline. If so, then we’re waving off one of the finest coaches ever to have graced the game.

@Chris – you must not take much notice of Irish fotball as he hasn’t actually done a “fine” job.
-He was paid approx. 8 million in 5 years
    – played the most negative soul destroying football we’ve ever seen
    – resulting in the usually sold out home games strugling for numbers and atmosphere
    – got to the Euro’s because we drew the easiest team in the qualifiers and then proceeded to be the worst performers there due to an antiquated 4-4-2 system that gave the players no chance.
    – constantly drilling in to the players and medias heads that they aren’t good enough to compete at international level which is nonsense, yes we can’t compete with Germany, Spain etc but Austria and Sweden? The quality of squads is similar yet we got 2 points from 4 games.
    – fell out with way too many players due to arrogance

“No doubt he’s left Irish football in a healthier state than inherited back in 2008” Not true, the first team was a shambles after Staunton and he provided stability but he has done nothing for the grass roots game in Ireland, watched very little football until the FAI forced him to and as mentioned created the most negative aura around an Ireland team ever (at least Staunton was funny to listen to)

Not sure where you got the Brian Mcdermot link from as there is no chance of that, it will be Martin O’Neill, Oweb Coyle, Chris Hughton, Mick McCarthy or a major outsider Roy Keane

So the old pervert won’t get to google at the young girls modelling kits anymore? Thank God, I felt embarrassed just looking at those pictures.
