With Leo Messi hampered by injury, Cristiano Ronaldo has arguably edged ahead in his battle with the Argentine imp for the title of Best Player In The World, and on Tuesday night the Madrid maestro did it again.

After netting the only goal of the first-leg of the World Cup play-off against Sweden, Ronaldo only went and netted a hat-trick to give Portugal a 4-2 aggregate victory over Sweden.

Here are the goals, all rather similar but all executed with the precision of a genius. Surely it’s Ballon D’or time for Cristiano?

    3 stunning assists as well

  3. Rob says:

I think what made the third one even better was that about 2 minutes before he scored it, he was on the floor suffering from what seemed like his third life threatening injury of the game.

How about the assists tho?! And btw, thats one crazy cameraman

I feel sorry for Andreas Isaksson. Awful defending.

It is interesting that the masses are now calling for Ronaldo to win the Balon D’or when since the date of the last awards, Messi has scored more, won more and provided more assists (during the calendar year), not to mention achieve the accolade of “highest goals scored in a calendar year.”

Ronaldo has been on fire since August of this year but, playing devil’s advocate, surely a few months of outstanding performances, no matter what the consequences, is not sufficient to win the award? If he keeps it up during the next 8 months or so, he should be nailed on for the award next season if nothing else.

In other news, Ribery must be banging his head against a brick wall at the moment. If for no other reason than to improve his appearance.

    those assists were phenomenal

I love all of those goals, they remind me of a deep post pattern to a fast receiver in the NFL. In the first one, it looks just like when a receiver dusts the corner (left back) at the line of scrimmage and the safeties (center backs) are too far up, as soon as he cuts inside at the halfway line he is gone. Barcelona can keep the tiki-tika, give me the deep ball any day.
