FIFA’s rankings aren’t always the most accurate, with their complex formula of coefficients and points meaning that it occasionally throws up an anomaly or two.

However, following England’s dismal show at the 2014 World Cup, the Three Lions’ fall from 10th to 20th is within the realms of believability. In hitting their lowest ranking position since May 1996, Roy Hodgson’s charges now find themselves below the likes of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Costa Rica and Greece. Hardly a list of footballing giants there.

World champs Germany go top, knocking the 2010 World champions Spain off their perch, with the Spaniards tumbling to eighth place.

For the first time that I can ever recall, those rankings look about right to me.

england definitely belong in the 20th spot, even though all the other teams above us arent football giants but they certainly played better then england

It pains me to see USA above England, but I’d say that’s totally accurate at the moment.

and somehow they’ll still be seeded……..go figure!

    France below Switzerland?

They wiped the floor with them!

Columbia though? Great to watch, but the fourth best team in the world? And have Belgium completed their transformation into England; over-hyped mis-matched Premier League players/disappointing WC quarter-finalists/hanging around the top ten rankings for no good reason..?

  9. Jock McKilty says:

    Yup. Englerland are indeed shite.

@Joe – Whilst our current position is depressingly merited, surely a side that consistently qualify for and generally reach the quarter-finals of major tournaments should, by rights, be ranked in and around the top ten? I mean it literally makes sense, considering that the quarter-final stage of a World Cup represents the last eight remaining sides in the entire world. Not to mention the fact that by and large we haven’t ‘lost’ the actual matches themselves and have gone out on pens, which I assume is also taken into account. Fortunately, FIFA rankings don’t use how much a countries population like to aimlessly moan about it’s national football team as part of their formula. If it did we’d be 208th.

The list has only been populated to get a brief giggle at Brazil in seventh

@joe If winning all of your group stage games, and making it to the quarter finals only to lose to the runner up by 1 goal is disappointment… Then sign me up for disappointment in 2018. England didn’t even manage to win a single game, I’d call that embarrassment… Belgium just feel short of expectation.

move France up to 8th and USA above Greece and I’ll agree with this ranking
