The 2015 Women’s World Cup got underway on Saturday night with hosts Canada meeting China in Edmonton. 53,000 watched the game at the Commonwealth Stadium, a record for either a women’s or men’s football game in Canada, but overall there was little in the way of real quality.

In the first-half, both sides did hit the woodwork but after the break, John Herdman’s side struggled to find a way past a well-drilled, if inexperienced China side.

But then, with the game almost over, China’s Zhao Rong was (very harshly) adjudged to have fouled Adriana Leon in the box. Veteran striker Christine Sinclair stepped up to place a perfect penalty kick past ‘keeper Wang Fei. And that was that.

Harsh on the Chinese, and one wonders if referee Kateryna Monzul would have given the penalty had it been at the other end.

Here are the highlights. The penalty decision is at around 1:27…

There were 61,000 at the concacaf champions league final in Montreal this year. I think FIFA might mean it’s the largest crowd for a national team game and I’m not sure about that, but their own tweet said “…biggest sports crowd in Canadian history.,” which is blatantly incorrect.

I don’t want to be sexist, ladies football is grand, but this isn’t a site about women’s football, I don’t really care about it so for me this is a kinda wasted article. Could be different for you other guys but just saying like, same goes with the BBC website they really shove the women’s game down your throat.

  3. Soccer Steve says:

    @ Dave

Who exactly is stopping you from starting your own male-only-and-nothing-but football website?
Who exactly is forcing you to read this article? And how much are they charging you to do so?

Sounds like you have bigger problems to deal with than one article on a satirical football website. Syria nice this time of year?

Would you be alright if pies just started promoting basketball instead of football? It’s a different sport that I don’t watch

  5. ToonArmyTX says:

Dave you are a prat. You just implied women’s football is a different sport than men’s football. That is incomprehensibly dumb. If you don’t watch it or care, don’t bloody read it. The rest of us just like football, plain and simple, and the Women’s World Cup is, whether you like it or not, a damn big deal now. So instead of coming here in the comments and embarrassing yourself, why not just read something different. My goodness…..

Its a penalty…no attempt to play the ball, bundled her over. Great to see 53K at this game. Really really great.

There must have been a lot of blokes going without their tea.

Harsh? That’s a penno all day long chuck, can’t expect to be getting away with an arm across the face in the area. Crisp finish an all.
