This Group B Women’s World Cup meeting between one of the favourites for the competition and the lowest ranked side was always going to be a one-sided affair. And that it was, to the tune of 10 goals to nil.

5-0 up at half-time, courtesy of a hat-trick from Celia Sasic and a brace from Anja Mittag, the European champions added five more after the break, with Mittag getting her third, along with goals from Simone Laudehr, Sara Daebritz, Melanie Behringer and Alexandra Popp. Although the Germans couldn’t equal their 2007 record 11-0 win against Argentina.

The Ivory Coast were poor throughout, with some of their defending dismal. However, considering this was their first appearance in the finals add to the fact that their development is severely hampered by financial constraints, the result shouldn’t come as a surprise. And if women’s teams such as the Ivory Coast are to improve, then they need to play (and get beaten by) the very best.

However, all that didn’t stop the usual sexist (and racist) nonsense pollutingTwitter during the game, unfortunately.
