Jay Bothroyd has caught Capello’s eye this season

Cautious Fabio Capello has rung the changes at last: Newcastle striker Andy Carroll, Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd (who has scored in his last seven games and was hotly tipped for a shock call-up), Man Utd defender Chris Smalling and Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson have all been named in England’s new-look squad for Wednesday’s friendly with France at Wembley Stadium. Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere also makes the cut, with Man City full-back Micah Richards picked for the first time by Capello.

Alas, Kevin Davies has been dropped, which is extremely harsh on the Bolton striker, who made his debut against Montenegro only last month and played a blinder  – in front of Capello – against Tottenham last week.

Bothroyd is talented, sure, but it’s a slight concern that Capello has to look outside of the top flight for forwards. But then Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent, Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora are all out injured.

Full England squad:

Goalkeepers: Ben Foster (Birmingham), Joe Hart (Man City), Rob Green (West Ham)

Defenders: Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), John Terry (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Joleon Lescott (Man City), Micah Richards (Man City), Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd), Chris  Smalling (Man Utd)

Midfielders: Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Man City), Adam Johnson (Man City), James Milner (Man City), Jordan Henderson (Sunderland)

Forwards: Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff), Andy Carroll (Newcastle), Peter Crouch (Tottenham)

It’s a fresh-looking squad, though I would have liked to see Tom Huddlestone in there instead of Barry. But as a Spurs fan, I am very biased and happily admit it.

What do you make of the squad?

PS. I love the way Capello announces his squads at the worst possible time for journalists in England. What a guy.

I hate west ham…. but where is scott parker? Surely he, hudds and wilshire would be a great shout for a midfield three? I also think that Jamie O’hara, if he hits last years form again when he comes back from injury, is someone who needs to go straight into the England set up. Realistically Bothroyd isn’t going to go to a major tournment so whats the point? Andy Carrol, Kevin Davies, Bobby Zamora, Darren Bent, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch are the strikers England should focus on and anyone else is just a needless distraction. I don’t know much about Henderson but after a few decent performances on match of the day and other highlight programmes he seems like he’s probably worth a go as well. Nice to see a bit of a change though.

just when i think capello can’t do any worse, he still manages to dig himself an ever deeper grave. someone needs to do something about this guy cause the defence of the champions league is a little bit different then the world class defence of some european teams. england arent goin anywere in 2012 and frankly im not surprised.

i love this squad! but yes, why is barry still here? huddlestone i my eyes is definately better than barry, and some of the other midfielders included in the squad. would love to see him in the next one.

    I guess it’s because Bothroyd is young…. oh wait, he’s 28.

    Good work Cappello

  7. J.J. says:

Bothroyd is a reasonable choice. Considering it’s a friendly, I’d like to see Johnson starting, along with Gibbs, Richards, Smalling, and Carrol. France isn’t too hot at the moment anyways.

Errr… where the hell is Phil Jones? Ever present for Rovers and in excellent form. Chris Smalling? What has he done? made a couple of substitute appearances? ridiculous bias.

  10. Tom Jones says:

    Why no Darren Bent?
