Here it is: the new N’cassle home strip for 2013/14, which has been launched a little bit later than planned after Papiss Cisse threw a wobbly about Wonga whacking their company name across the chest.

SPOILER ALERT: It’s black and white…

Davide Santon

Liking the subtle blue detailing.

All in all, very smart – apart from the utterly odious sponsor, of course.

It is a smart kit but I am still not buying anything with Wonga emblazoned across it.

People can bring up the “well, banks exploited punters during the sub-prime trend and continue to shaft consumers or a regular basis” argument until they are blue in the face; Wonga’s business model is (in my eyes) unconscionable and a club with the profile of Newcastle United should not be anywhere near it.

    Unfortunately, money talks. Bullshit, mostly.

  2. JJ says:

Great shout Si….Bolton Fans done exactly the same and club realised and done something about it….Really hope Newcastle fans follow this right moral compass also….

  3. GiveFootballBack says:

Wish there was an option to pay a premium and get a shirt without a sponsor.

  4. El Pollo Loco says:

All Premier League clubs have new kits except Arsenal this season.

  5. syndex says:

At everton we are sponsored by chang who as a beer company so the sponsorship is not carried on the junior kits, looking at the newcastle site http://www.nufcdirect.com/2013-2014-new-kit it will be carried on the juniors which to me is a bit unplesant. I wonder what would have happened if Papa Cisse had turn around and said it is not religious its just that the company and its practices are immoral.

  6. Ross says:

It is a touchy subject having such a sponsor across a shirt, however, (and I may ruffle a few feathers here) I don’t really have a problem with a team being sponsored by Wonga.

It is my understanding that Wonga markets itself as a SHORT TERM pay day lender, with charges outlined before the transfer of any funds is carried out. If the individual taking out the loan pays all back within the agreed time period then the astronomical interest rates would be avoided. If not, then they would unfortunately incur the interest until all is paid off.

So, it could all boil down to an individual actually taking responsibility…don’t lend what you can’t afford to pay back!

  7. Joe says:

It’s better than having a red & white logo splashed accross the front, as we did last year. It’s blue, so it’s a long overdue return to our traditioanl full colours. Thank you Wonga, you’ve given back a little bit of our herritage.

I can’t see that being the popular view though. Especially from those that have apparently been forced into applying for a loan with severe penalties for late repayments.

  8. Joe says:

Funny how fans will put up with the most descpicable – often criminal – players signing for their club and soiling the shirt, yet a legitamate (albeiet one with poor value product) business with very clear terms & conditions has made everyone pious.

Where was the outrage when ‘Bowyer’ was splashed across the stripes?

  9. Peters says:

@Joe – don’t forget we also had Jonathan Woodgate for a short time…

  10. Andy Carroll's Ponytail says:

Kinda agree with Ross: it’s a no demand, no supply situation.

At the very least (which isn’t saying very much), Wonga (from my view over here in the far east) is a legitimate, registered business. So at least if they are to try and recover the debt owed, they’ll have to use legal means (I hope).

Over here, we have what are known as “loan sharks”. Basically illegal money lenders who charged 200% interest (at least) on every day LATE in repayment. And then it gets really nasty when they try to recover the debt.

Still, it’s a non too pleasant sponsor to be associated with.
