Having spluffed a reported £71million to procure his signature from Monaco, it seems like Real Madrid are well on their way to recouping the money they spent on James Rodriguez in shirts sales and merchandising alone.

Spanish paper Sport are reporting that, according to the people at Euromericas Sport Marketing, Real Madrid have capitalised on “Jamesmania” both among Madridistas and Colombian fans by successfully shifting approximately 345,000 “James” replica shirts in the 48 hours since the forward was unveiled in front of 44,000 people at the Bernabeu.

That’s roughly 7,188 shirts an hour, worldwide.

Marketing strategy for the win!

With a replica t-shirt with James’ name and number printed retailing at $97.25 on the official website, Real Madrid have already recovered a little over $33m in two days from this kid. Smart!

  3. Joe says:

Madrid have bought themselves one hell of a talent. But at least half that fee is for the pretty boy with an interchangeable, pan-continental name. They’ve got this thing down to a tee. What a company.

Meanwhile, Barca are trying to wipe out their own history by completely changing tact on transfer policy by buying one of the game’s most reviled players.

The numbers are probably right. Colombians love James. I’m Colombian and I have already ordered two shirts for my kids. I would have ordered one for myself as well but the official online shop doesn’t have James shirts for women yet :( I will buy it as soon as it’s available :)

I’d love to see Rooney go there for jumbo salary and flop miserably.

  6. Fnarf says:

Should have asked for more money. They’ve already got a third of it back and he hasn’t touched a ball for them.

Your calculations are completely wrong, because Real Madrid won’t receive the full Mount of Money for themselves. Adidas, taxes, license Are reduzier their profit massivly. Accordimg to an article im a German newspaper which was about the german jersey, they earn approximately the half of the full price…

  8. Maria says:

What’s their profit on each shirt? (they won’t have raked in $33 mil!) Still a nice chunk recouped!

These numbers count all the people called ‘James’ who just wanted their own name on the shirt though ;-)
