It looked for all the world that Shalke were dead and buried when beloved neighbours Borussia Dortmund blitzed to a 4-0 lead inside the first 25 minutes of Saturday’s instalment of the Ruhr derby.
However, Schalke received a good old fashioned rocket up the arsch at the break and, thanks to steady slew of second-half goals, Naldo’s thumping header in the 94th minute ultimately saw the visitors escape with an unlikely 4-4 draw.
Rather oddly, seeing as they only scavenged a point from the Westfalenstadion, Schalke have decided to immortalise their Revierderby result in commemorative t-shirt form.
Made available a few days after the match, a ‘Derbysieger’ t-shirt appeared in the official club store, priced at €19.95…
We can only assume that the shirt is supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek jibe at Dortmund, especially as ‘Derbysieger’ translates as ‘Derby Winners’.
Even so, we can’t help but be reminded on West Ham’s infamously awful ‘Treble’ shirts and mugs, which they produced to make a sequence of three historic wins over Tottenham in the 2013/14 season.
It should be noted that the Hammers’ formidable treble still saw them finish 29 points behind their cross-city rivals in the Premier League table, but that really is just a moot point in the grand scheme of bloody appalling banter.
