Calling one of the most respected footballers in the world (Marcel Desailly) a ‘F**king lazy thick n***er’ wasn’t Ron Atkinson‘s best career move, and he quite rightly resigned from his role as pundit for ITV, as well as losing his Guardian column. Atkinson almost became manager of Trinidad and Tobago for the 2006 World Cup, but understandably Dwight Yorke and co weren’t happy about that and Leo Beenhakker got the gig instead. So Atkinson spent the summer making a World Cup video
blog and distributing it through SelfcastTV.com.

The rehabilitation of Big Ron Atkinson continued…

And now it seems his rehabilitation is complete – you can watch Big Ron on BBC2, where he’s one of the ‘celebs’ taking part in Excuse My French
(ah, the delicious double irony), a reality show where three ‘celebs’ (Esther Rantzen
and Marcus Brigstocke make up the ghoulish trio) are sent to Provence
to learn, you’ve guessed it, French. If this interests you, the second, third and final parts of this four-part series are to be shown on 25 July, 1 August and 8 August, on BBC2.

So apparently Big Ron has done his time,
enough water has passed under the bridge etc. Mixed feelings on this one. He was a brilliant co-commentator and I still miss his Ronglish, but I can never forget what he said about Desailly.

Well said. Here in the Midlands it’s as if he’s never been away. Give that man’s PR a pay rise!
