Puskas football 1954

The ten nominees for the 2013 Puskas Award (i.e, FIFA’s Goal of the Year award) have been announced this morning and a wonderful cavalcade of scorchers, pingers and screamers they are too.

As always, FIFA have whittled the long-list down to their chosen ten using their FOUR CRITERIA OF DOOM!: 1) aesthetics, 2) importance, 3) whether the goal was a result of any luck/defensive error and, 4) whether it was scored in the spirit of fair play.

The nominees are as follows…

1. Peter Ankersen (Esbjerg) vs AGF…

2. Lisa De Vanna (Sky Blue FC) vs Boston Breakers…

3. Antonio Di Natale (Udinese) vs Chievo…

4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden) vs England…

5. Panagiotis Kone (Bologna) vs Napoli…

6. Louisa Necib (Lyon) vs St Etienne…

7. Daniel Luduena (Pachua) vs Tigres…

8. Nemanja Matic (Benfica) vs Porto…

9. Juan Manuel Olivera (Nautico) vs Sport Recife…

10. Neymar (Brazil) vs Japan…

We love, love, love Di Natale’s immaculate volley against Chievo with all our heart and it’s about time the little man had his uniformly sterling work for Udinese given a little more credit, but there’s only one winner as far as we’re concerned: Zlatan – solely on the basis that we’re never ever going to see a goal like that again in our lifetime.

Watching it back, it’s still absolutely unbelievable now – a clear calendar year after it went in!

As always, if you’d like to officially vote through FIFA’s various channels, then you can do so here.

If you’d like to just tell us who your favourite is, then give us a nudge in the comments box.

Another Joe Hart shaky moment leading to a goal there!

  2. AT says:

I agree about Di Natale, but can’t argue with Zlatan.

  3. Earl Blootlet says:

For once, I can’t decide which is best.
Di Natale, Matic, Zlatan and Olivera stand out for me though.
Be it for the individual skill or how it was constructed.
I fear Neymar will win it because of his popularity, however.

  4. Paul W says:

Surely some mistake, they seem to have missed out Paddy McCourt’s wonder goal for Barnsley against Boro!

  5. Wilson says:

Speaking as a guy who loves a good old-fashioned poacher who does fuck-all but scores goals, Di Natale is my personal favourite.

  6. Nuno says:

Di Natale’s is a good goal, but not sure if it deserves to be on the list. Mexes’ goal against Anderlecht was much better, IMO, and isn’t even on the list.
But unless Neymar’s popularity steals it, it should be Zlatan’s goal for the win, no doubt.

  7. js94 says:

Got to be Zlatan, Kone’s and Di Natale’s were both incredible technique, but when you compare them to Zlatan they just fall short

  8. carl says:

Zlatan. 6 and 7 links are dead. xx

  9. Wesley says:

Yes but link no. 7 goes to the Neymar goal;)

  10. Chris says:

@Wesley: Eh? It doesn’t for me. Maybe there’s an issue with FIFA’s autoplay playlist shuffling at random?

  11. Luke says:

Due to my love of competition opening goals Neymar is right up there, but you cannot argue with The Zlatan!

  12. Jon says:

Has to be Di Natale or Zlatan for me, but how come there’s no love for Wilshere’s against Norwich? Past the deadline or something?

  13. Teddy Ballgame says:

Zlatan, considering the game, the venue, and the team he was playing against… Zlatan.

  14. Amsterdamadrista says:

    Zlatan…Hands down!!!

  15. Greg says:

    That Kone goal……..woof!

  16. Billy Bob says:

It’s a hard choice between Zlatan and Olivera for me. The team work on that Olivera was amazing, but Zlatan probably gets the edge because that’s simply a goal of a life time.

  17. Zlatan could have filled up the list with 10 of his goals this season, they’re good enough.

  18. Room101 says:

Surely Zlatan’s goal was as a result of defensive error? Brilliant technique, don’t get me wrong, but only presented to him because Joe Hart went AWOL from his box thinking he could head it clear…?

  19. Giancarlo says:

Zlatan with Di Natale coming second very close. Both players are goal scoring machines who score highlight reel goals year in year out as oppose to the others, and Di Natale’s was with his weaker foot!

  20. JMA says:

If the award covers the 2012-13 season time period, then surely RVP’s volley against Aston Villa meets the criteria better than any other goal on the shortlist, great goals that they all are.

  21. Calgacus says:

    Just one word. ZLATAN!

  22. Kingsland 101 says:

For me it’s got to be No.7. He scored from his own half after turning someone brilliantly! Just under the bar too.

RVPs probably wasn’t in there as Di Natale’s volley is just a better version. Perfect placement and obviously meant it. Surprised that Bale’s quick touch and finish from outside the box wasn’t in there though, it has skill that none of the others do.

Too many thumping volleys in there. Anyone who plays knows that some of those are probably just hit as hard as possible in the general direction of the space between the post and the keeper. Still look good though.

  23. Zaaker says:

Fifa Are Biased… Cant believe this is not one of the contenders for best goals…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn_UaOkBhZk

  24. Robbie j says:

zlatan’s goal was with high level of much confidence, di natalie’s strike was brilliant as well, neymar’s goal was a splendid competition opener but all d same i’ll give it to zlatan
