Top Six: defenders you could put in your fantasy football team

Who’s got your back?
Pies picks six defenders who will strengthen your fantasy XI
1. Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd)
Pros The best central defender in Europe right now, and plays for the team that conceded fewer goals than any other in the Prem last season. In this era of squad rotation, Fergie doesn’t ever think of dropping Rio for a league match.
Cons One of the most expensive defenders in all fantasy games. Other defenders – full-backs, mostly – will get more assists for you.
More after the jump…

2. Gael Clichy (Arsenal)
Pros Loves to get forward, so should get you plenty of assists. Arsenal don’t leak many goals. One of the most improved defenders in the league.
Cons Expensive to buy, but I’d definitely have him in my starting XI.
3. Ashley Cole (Chelsea)
Pros Has settled in at Chelsea now. Plays in a tight defence. Loves to get forward. Should be operating around his peak this season.
Cons May not play every league game. Do you really want this man in your team?
4. Gareth Bale (Spurs)
May start a few games in left midfield, enhancing his chances of scoring and providing assists. Great at set pieces. Juande Ramos seems to rate him highly.
Cons The big four will all concede fewer goals than Spurs this season. He is injury prone.
5. Phil Jagielka (Everton)
Everton don’t ship many goals. Like Bale, he may play in midfield on occasion. A versatile player who is set to have a good second season for his club.
Cons May pick up too many cards. Not 100% certain of a starting place.
6. Daniel Agger (Liverpool)
Pros Liverpool concede few goals. After missing so much of last season, he should be fresh and can cement his position as Rafa’s first-choice centre-back. He does get forward for corners and will pick up the odd goal.
Cons Injury prone. Expensive.
