Eighth place, below Everton, 31 points off the top, second bottom of the top flight’s 2012 form league and on course for their worst ever Premier League finish, King Kenny Dalglish is rapidly losing is monarchical lustre at Anfield being, as he is, currently in the act of helming Liverpool on their worst run of form for 59 years.
Thankfully, footballing success is not metered out in trophies and points, but in merchandising, kit deals and smiles. Oh, hang on…
Liverpool’s 2-0 loss at Newcastle was their sixth defeat in seven games, which ain’t a great run whichever way you look at it – but the game was also peppered with little incidents that hinted at a frissant of unrest and strain in the camp; Andy Carroll filing some very suspect body language then gallumping straight down the tunnel after being substituted, Pepe Reina being sent-off for trying to nuzzle James Perch in the face and this – Steven Gerrard shooing an encroaching Dalglish from the field like a tramp who had just shown up on the red carpet of a film première…
Now, the obvious explanation is that Gerrard was merely attempting to stop his irked manager from getting himself into any unnecessary trouble but, quite frankly, Occam and his soddin’ razor can go and do one.
