Sadly it wasn’t to be for Liverpool in the Europa League tonight, despite it looking as if a classic Anfield second-leg comeback was shaping up, there was no “GGGGEEEEEERRRRRRRRRAAAAAAARRRRDDDD!!!” finish against Zenit.
Liverpool bossed the second leg with a tidy 3-1 win but the Russian’s were able to hold onto their 2-0 first-leg advantage to go through on away goals, despite it looking fairly hairy for them throughout the last half-an-hour or so.
A little postcard ‘Pool fans will be able to take away, however, was a gloriously struck Luis Suarez freekick – the second of a brace of set-pieces tucked away by the Uruguayan – which was slung swinging a foot or so outside the post, only to bend back sweetly inside the upright with laser-guided accuracy…
Here’s the obligatory GIF, courtesy of Mock Session…
Sweet Mama Pyjama! When he’s good, he’s very good.
Having ran himself into the ground again, Suarez’s stance at the final whistle said it all…
That’s your lot for now. We’ll have more reaction, photos and highlights of tonight’s various Europa League games as and when.
