Liverpool 1-1 FC Basel – Champions League Group B – 9th December 2014

Anfield has played host to many a great European night, but on Tuesday the Liverpool fans bore witness to a limp display from the Reds, and one which saw the Merseysiders dumped out of the Champions League before the knockout stages.

The hosts were nervous throughout this crunch game but were expected to overcome Swiss side Basel. However, it was the visitors who would open the scoring on 25 minutes, courtesy of a fine effort from Fabian Frei. Despite going a goal down, Liverpool struggled to create chances with Basel looking the more likely to score again.

The second-half introduction of Lazar Markovic added a spark to the home side but he then saw red (harshly) on the hour-mark for raising his hands. Steven Gerrard did level the scores late on with a superb free-kick but despite a late surge, Brendan Rodgers’ men would ultimately bow out after a disappointing campaign, with a place in the Europa League the Reds’ consolation prize.
