There was nothing miraculous about Liverpool’s night in Istanbul on Thursday, with the Reds going out of the Europa League after losing on penalties to Besiktas.

Going into the second leg clash a goal up, Brendan Rodgers’ side were the better side in the first-half with Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge both failing to make the most of decent chances. In the second period, Slaven Bilic’s side improved and eventually made it on 1-1 on aggregate when Tolgay Arslan deftly curled the ball past Simon Mignolet.

Demba Ba then had a great chance to win the tie in injury time only for the ball to come back off the underside of the bar. The Senegalese hitman was then thwarted by Mignolet in extra-time, which meant another shoot-out in the Ataturk Stadium for the Merseysiders.

Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Joe Allen all put away their spot-kick before the game’s sole goalscorer on the night, Arslan, make it 5-4. Up stepped Dejan Lovren of all people, to keep his side in the game. However, the centre-half blazed the ball high and wide to end the Reds’ Euro-adventures at least for another season.
