Liverpool, without the injured Daniel Sturridge, kept alive their (faint) hopes of a top four finish with a deserved 2-0 win at home to Newcastle.

Man of the moment Raheem Sterling opened the scoring after just nine minutes, with the England man cutting inside Ryan Taylor before firing past Tim Krul in the Magpies’ goal.

The Reds were by far the better side in the first period and Sterling himself should have added to his tally

However, the Magpies were denied what looked like a penalty when Dejan Lovren challenged Ayoze Perez in the Liverpool box.

In the second-half, Jon Carver’s men did their best to get back into the game. However, it was the Reds who would score next, with Joe Allen firing home on 70 minutes.

The visitors’ hopes of getting even a goal back were then deal a major blow, with Moussa Sissoko sent off, courtesy of a second yellow, for a studs-up challenge on Lucas Leiva.

While not a particularly impressive performance from Brendan Rodgers’ men, it was enough to move them to within four points of fourth-placed Man City. Newcastle, on the other hand, continue to tread water as Carver’s dismal time in charge drags on.

Not exactly a vintage display, then again its been a disrupted campaign(yes it has!)…newcastle were very very unlucky with the penalty.

Still think when that the pendulum swings in games – referees arent great at giving the correct decisions ie. for both teams. Or its just a damn hard job to get every decision right. Two refs?
