Liverpool’s French defender Mamodou Sakho is under investigation by UEFA after failing a drugs test.

The 26-year-old is reported to have tested positive for a fat burning drug after the Reds’ Europa League win against Manchester United on March 17th. The former PSG star was left out of Liverpool’s squad for their 2-2 draw with Newcastle on Saturday, with the club deciding not to call up the player during the investigation.

UEFA have stated that they’ve not started any disciplinary proceeding yet, while Sakho has until Tuesday to request a B sample.

After the clash with Newcastle which saw Liverpool throw away a two-goal lead, manager Jurgen Klopp said:

I’m really limited what I can say. There’s is an official statement and there’s nothing else to say. It’s not the most easy situation that’s for sure but maybe we can say more when we know more maybe next week.

We changed a lot of players in the last few weeks including at centre-half so I can’t say we missed Mama.

The defender has impressed this season for the Merseysiders, but a subsequent ban could see the centre-half miss out on EURO 2016 where France are the hosts.

As for Liverpool themselves, they won’t be facing any disciplinary charges themselves as the matter only concerns the player himself. However, the news comes at a bad time for Klopp and co., who are soon to face Villarreal in the Europa League semi-finals as well as battling it out for a top-five berth in the Premier League.

So the club won’t be punished for one of its players taking a banned substance? Then why not have half the squad on drugs, worst case scenario is you get caught, the player maybe gets a ban, the club gets away scot free, and can reap the possible rewards from playing ‘enhanced’ players. Farce of a situation.

Yes, anyone who DARES to say anything negative against Angels-Innocents-and-Victims-FC must be a “bitter manc”. It is 100% impossible for anyone other than a Manchester United fan to question the fairness of the policy about drugging. The logic of a LFC fan is faultless… (sidenote: I’m not a Manchester United fan, but if I was, I’d be baffled as to what it is I’m supposed to be “bitter” about? The 1 Europa League tie you won? That one time you almost won a league title? That it’s not far off every player in your squad not even being born since the last league win? That you’ve needed one owner after another to pay off your debts and you still cannot compete with the likes of Arsenal or Manchester club? That “next year” will absolutely certainly be your year, just like the one before it, and before that, and before that.) You might want to focus on your own delusions about Perfect FC rather than assuming everyone else is ‘bitter’ and a ‘manc’.

Maybe it’s nothing to do with the drugs, but Sakho did on occasion look like someone off their tits on stimulants.

You know, like Maradonna at WC ’94.

Why couldn’t he have gotten a Ritalin or Adderall prescription like everyone else. Legal and also somewhat safer than ephedrine. If that’s what it was

why couldn’t he have just taken meth like I do every week

    It won’t be their/his fault….it never is.
