Southampton will appear in their first major final since 2003 after the Saints shocked Liverpool at Anfield in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

Saints were 1-0 up from the first leg, courtesy of Nathan Redmond’s goal at St. Mary’s and at Anfield on Wednesday night, the visitors repeated the scoreline.

Liverpool dominated possession and had a number of chances to get themselves back into the tie, with Daniel Sturridge going close twice.

German midfielder Emre Can almost opened the scoring for the Reds, only for Fraser Forster to claw the goal-bound effort after initially making a mess of the save.

Late on, a challenge on Divock Origi in the box by Jack Stephens led to cries for a penalty. However, referee Ben Atkinson was having none of it.

Soon after that penalty appeal, Southampton, who were a threat on the break all evening, would seal their place at Wembley with Shane Long firing home after a swift counter-attack.

Jurgen Klopp’s men had no time to respond, leaving Claude Puel’s side to enjoy a fabulous and, overall deserved, 2-0 aggregate win.

Southampton can now look forward to an EFL Cup final clash with either Manchester United or Hull City.

As for Liverpool, they have won just one of their six games in January, as their promising season continues to falter.
