James Milner fluffed his lines from the penalty spot as Liverpool failed to solidify their Champions League hopes against Southampton on Sunday, with the game ending goalless.

Overall, the clash was a turgid affair, with Liverpool rarely threatening Saints’ goal.

However, on 66 minutes, the hosts had a gilt-edged chance to take the lead, after Jack Stephens handled the ball in the Southampton box.

Milner, a spot-kick specialist, stepped up to the take the resulting penalty, only to see his effort saved by Frasier Forster.

Liverpool sub Marko Grujic went close late on but ultimately, the game would end 0-0, with Southampton the happier of the two sides.

The draw sees Jurgen Klopp and co. go third, five points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United and six ahead of Arsenal.

However, the Red Devils have one game in hand while the Gunners have two more to play than Liverpool.

Southampton, after a hard-earned point, go 10th.
