Merseyside Police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the droves of moronic death threats sent to Loris Karius in the wake of Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

The German ‘keeper was left distraught after the 3-1 loss in which he made two significant errors, which sparked the absolute worst sub-sect of football fandom – the hard-line virtual ultras – into action…

#YNWA, indeed.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said that they take this kind of hateful nonsense “extremely seriously” and that all offences logged will be followed up:

Officers are aware of a number of comments and threats made via social media.

Merseyside Police would like to remind social media users than any offences including malicious communications and threatening behaviour will be investigated.

Unfortunately, this is what transpires when your ‘support’ for any given team is allowed to form at a distance and in a vacuum, with the only connection being through a television screen and social media. You’re not ‘in’ and you’re not ‘of’ the club. Your support is a facade, a petulant pastiche.

This kind of extremist reaction, more common than ever before, is thought by the fan in question to be a by-product of their ‘passion’ when in fact no true fan would ever contemplate such idiocy.

So, you’re playing into all of this by showing the names on your website…Kind of encourages retaliation against those folks, don’t you think?

Just report the story. Don’t play the game.

If these asinines get asinine behavior against them, I guess that’s “the circle of life” completing. When you actually wish someone to die, or for their kids to have cancer over a mistake, who cares? Maybe next time they retreat to their cave. (especially given Karius is the one to suffer most from this mistake – them as fans have 10/20/50 more years to win a CL; harder for Karius to get back there and actually play it and win it, not to speak the impact it may have on his career).
