An awful match to watch, but for a youngish, almost second-string Liverpool side that was without Messrs Torres and Gerrard, this has to be a good point. Whilst David Ngog and Ryan Babel proved again that they are not good enough, Kopites will have been encouraged by the dynamic performance of Jonjo Shelvey and, to a lesser extent, Jay Spearing. I though Martin Skrtel had a solid game too.

Not that Liverpool’s opponents played well; for a side that lies fourth in Serie A, Napoli were shockingly lethargic for long spells in the game.

There were rumours that Roy Hodgson would quit after the game, but he has since announced that he is going nowhere.

“Resignation has never once entered my thoughts and never will. I’m here for the long haul,” Hodgson said after the match.

“I came here believing I can help Liverpool rebuild. The players are behind everything we’re doing.”

The players, maybe. The fans, not so much.
