Russia Soccer Man City Toure Racism

Flying in the face of the empirical evidence presented to them, CSKA Moscow have denied that their fans taunted Man City midfielder Yaya Toure with monkey chants during the Champions League tie between the two sides last night.

Toure complained about the “stupid” racist chants after the game, but CSKA’s deputy media manager, Michael Sanadze, has since appeared on Sky Sports News to assure everybody that “nothing special happened” and that the Ivorian behemoth probably just imagined the taunts:

“There is no subject to discuss. Nothing special happened. There was a lot of noise in the stadium. Nobody else, other than Yaya Toure, heard anything.

“The only trouble that has come about was because Yaya Toure heard something.”

So, there you go. There’s only a problem with racist chanting if/when the targeted players hear them and so, by extension, all of football’s inherent racism woes could therefore be solved if all non-white players were simply issued with ear plugs before each game. Easy as peas.

You’ve got to admit: those are some pretty impressive denial-based mental gymnastics Sanadze is performing there.

This sounds like a job for Rioveggia…

  1. Mustapha says:

Why make a fuzz about it? Racial abuse is no worse than a lot of the other abuse at every football game around the world.

  2. al says:

I won’t even comment on mustapha’s “enlightened” post but this is despicable from CSKA and what are UEFA doing??? absolutely nothing, if it was an English club they would be banned but you couldn’t ban a Russian club what with the world cup being there in a few years and all that, might get their big brother FIFA in a strop over sponsorship

  3. Cosa says:

Russia clubs do this every time. Denial and make it look like the player made it up. Ridiculous

  4. felix sanchez says:

I’m not Russian but I speak the language and follow what’s happening in the country and denial is normal behaviour there.

  5. JP says:

If people like Mustapha need clarification/explanations for this behavior…where do we even begin with addressing this horrific behavior?

  6. Ross says:

Platini and co would raise hell if this happened on English soil! UEFA/FIFA must be overwhelmed by all of the paper envelopes to ignore something so obvious (not for the first time either!)

  7. Blapp Setter says:

    Stupid Mustapha.

  8. Teddy Ballgame says:

I wonder how the foreign players on CSKA felt whilst the chanting occurred…

Foreign players should boycott these racist/bigoted teams, if they did I’m sure all of said teams would become less-competitive, crippled, and relegated within a season and we wouldn’t have to worry about these asshats in the European Leagues.

  9. Jarren says:

Seydou Doumbia, a player for CSKA who is also from the Ivory Coast, said he heard nothing racist.

Is it possible that Toure simply heard booing?

If not, what the hell is going on?

Is Doumbia covering up racism or is Toure stirring shit up?

    Someone’s full of shit, regardless.

  10. Pambolero says:

Please, were talking about Russia here. A few months ago the pole vaulter Isinbayeva commented very publicly about her support for her country’s anti-homosexual laws and asked that everyone respect their customs, or words to that effect. The fetching young lady from Pussy Riot is in prison for singing about Putin and the government … and racism is simply an accepted reality of life in Russia. Who out there, besides CSKA, really doubts Yaya Toure?

  11. Joe says:

“Flying in the face of the empirical evidence presented to them”

Has more evidence emerged beyond the player’s accusation? There are not many things worse than racism, but being wrongly accused as a racist is pretty high on my list.

  12. Jarren says:

    Indeed, Joe.

My mind jumps straight to Mark Clattenburg.
