Southampton 0-3 Manchester City – Premier League – 30th November 2014

Manchester City revitalised their title tilt with a powerful display away at second-placed Southampton on Sunday, despite having to play the last 16 minutes with 10 men.

The high-flying hosts struggled to create much in the way of goal-scoring chances, with the Citizens solid and slick. City could have been a goal-up in the first -half when they should have won a penalty, only for Sergio Aguero to pick up an unwarranted booking for a dive when he had been clearly felled in the Saints’ box by Jose Fonte. However, it took until early in the second-half for the opening goal to come, with Yaya Touré firing home from a Sergio Aguero pull-back.

The sending of Eliaquim Mangala on  74 minutes looked to have given the Saints a way back into the game, but it was City whoo would power home two more goals. Sub Frank Lampard produced a trademark finish before Gael Clichy finished off a superb team move with his first goal for his club.

The win sees Manuel Pellegrini’s men leapfrog Southampton into second-place, and they now find themselves just six points behind leaders Chelsea. Ronald Koeman’s side are now a point further behind.

It just displays what everyone has thought for quite a while…

When it comes to playing teams expected to sit in the top 6-8 come end of season, Southampton will fall.

They’re a solid side, and they can comfortably beat half of the Premiership.

They should be more than happy, given a lot of their own fans were predicting relegation over the World Cup last summer.

  2. Cal says:

Isn’t Arsenal the same way though? Can’t beat those in the top 4-6, but beat everyone else and end up in 4th?

  3. Jarren says:

Aye, every year Arsenal seem to scrape into 4th somehow.

They either have a blistering start to the season then get 134 injuries or have a mediocre start but end strong.

I can see them doing it this season too. Who knows, maybe Henry will come back in January as a coach / mentor like Giggs is at United (alongside Wenger & Bould of course).

I just can’t see the Saints finishing top 6. They’ve been beaten 3 times this season; City are understandable but Liverpool & Spurs?

They are teams who would take a Europa League spot now if you offered them it. Chances are they’ll finish top 8.

    They both beat Southampton.
