Southampton 0-3 Manchester City – Premier League – 30th November 2014
Manchester City revitalised their title tilt with a powerful display away at second-placed Southampton on Sunday, despite having to play the last 16 minutes with 10 men.
The high-flying hosts struggled to create much in the way of goal-scoring chances, with the Citizens solid and slick. City could have been a goal-up in the first -half when they should have won a penalty, only for Sergio Aguero to pick up an unwarranted booking for a dive when he had been clearly felled in the Saints’ box by Jose Fonte. However, it took until early in the second-half for the opening goal to come, with Yaya Touré firing home from a Sergio Aguero pull-back.
The sending of Eliaquim Mangala on 74 minutes looked to have given the Saints a way back into the game, but it was City whoo would power home two more goals. Sub Frank Lampard produced a trademark finish before Gael Clichy finished off a superb team move with his first goal for his club.
The win sees Manuel Pellegrini’s men leapfrog Southampton into second-place, and they now find themselves just six points behind leaders Chelsea. Ronald Koeman’s side are now a point further behind.
