Back on May 7th , Yaya Toure’s agent Dimitri Seluk said his client was “90 per cent certain” to quit Manchester City. Seluk said the Ivorian Toure, who joined City in 2010, was in a bidding war with three clubs. Seluk added that Manuel Pellegrini was a “weak manager”.

Toure never did leave and yesterday he was imperious, scoring twice in Man City’s classy 3-0 drubbing of a pretty limp West Brom…

After the match, Pelligrini spoke of the powerhouse:

We spoke a long way before the start of the season and I am very sure we will see the Yaya from two years ago. He is a very important player. He was not focused maybe on what he had to do last season. His head was not in his best moment. I don’t think he deserved the amount of criticism. It was not his best season but he did not play so bad.

Yaya’s performances were affected by the death of his brother, Ibrahim, a year ago.

Pelligrini went on:

I enjoy when technical players play in a technical way. David Silva played a brilliant performance, especially in the first half, and not making any mistakes. With Yaya, I think we will see the return of the Yaya of one season ago, not last season when he had so many problems.

Toure was bullish in victory:

I know what I have to do and I don’t care what people say about me. I’m not back – I’m always there. It’s about the team. We did a massive job today. West Brom have a good manager and players. Full credit to all our team. We made it easy because we played our own football, we played with belief and intensity.

Manchester City look really good. And here’s a fact for their Premier League title rivals to ponder: in each of the previous five seasons the eventual Premier League champions have kicked off the season on a Monday night. West Brom have some work to do but City look good value.
